Leisure Sports

Full year course, 10 units, grades 11-12

Prerequisites: C or better in previous PE classes.

Description: The purpose of this course is to offer a more diverse choice of physical education activities for students once they progress past the first two years of high school. For students who don’t participate in competitive athletics, but want to remain active beyond the tenth grade, a course in leisure sports would be ideal. One of the often overlooked purposes of high school physical education is to provide activities for the students to participate in beyond high school, giving them varied possibilities to remain active and fit throughout their lifetime. Physical activity plays a vital role in reducing stress and providing mental stimulus for a healthy, happy, active life. The activities that will be introduced as a part of this course will provide entertainment and competition without the rigors of strenuous exercise. This course will explore Archery, Bowling, Golf, Rock Climbing/Hiking, Fly Fishing, and Orienteering as leisure sports that can be adopted and continued throughout adult life, long after most people discontinue competitive athletics. The yearlong elective course will be divided into six week units of activity. Each unit will offer the opportunity to master the physical and mental skills needed to advance in these activities
