For Fall 2022 applicants (current seniors), most schools are either test optional or will NOT consider test scores in admissions processes.
CSUs: CSUs are Test FREE and will NOT consider SAT or ACT test scores for admissions.
If a student submits test scores they may be used for Math/English placement after you enroll.
UCs: UCs are Test FREE and will NOT consider SAT or ACT test scores for admissions.
If a student submits test scores, they may be used to determine your eligibility for the California statewide admissions guarantee, as an alternative method of fulfilling minimum requirements for eligibility or for course placement after you enroll.
Private and Out-of-State Colleges / Universities: Many private colleges and universities are test optional for Fall 2021 and Fall 2022 applicants. Many of these schools already were test optional prior to COVID-19. Out-of-state public colleges will vary on testing requirements. Check individual school admissions websites for information.
Military Academies/ROTC Scholarships:
Military Academies and ROTC programs may require test scores. Check with individual academies/programs for information. More information to follow.
What does "TEST OPTIONAL" mean?
You choose whether or not to submit SAT/ACT scores with your application. Admissions representatives understand many students are unable to take SAT/ACT at this time and do not expect students to submit!
If you are unable or choose not to submit test scores, your application will still receive full consideration.
Applicants will not be penalized in the admission review process if they don't submit SAT/ACT scores.
What does "TEST FREE" mean?
Test Free means that the school will NOT look at any SAT/ACT scores for admissions purposes even if submitted.
If the school/program they are applying for requires it, yes. You may need to take it at a later date. Talk to admissions officers to find out about extensions.
If the student is able to register and test locally and wants to, then yes.
If the student is not able to register and test locally, or does not want to, then no.
It is not recommended to go to extreme measures to take the SAT or ACT. Applications without test scores, even for test optional schools, will be given the same consideration as other applications. Many local test centers have been cancelling the exams. You are able to share this information on the applications. This information is also included in the School Profile that is provided to private colleges/universities during the application process. Admissions officers are all sharing with counselors that it is completely optional to submit test scores and that all applications will receive the same consideration.
