Berkeley Summer Experience
Berkeley Summer Experience is a series of comprehensive application workshops and information sessions intended to introduce prospective students to the UC application and admissions process, as well as the UC Berkeley undergraduate experience. During the program, students will learn how to present a strong application for UC admission, meet current students and/or alumni, and learn of the many resources and activities offered at one of the world’s leading universities. Participants of Berkeley Summer Experience receive support that does not end after the program. Our admissions staff continue to support students through the application cycle to prepare students with their applications.

They are looking to recruit young people ages 17-25 to serve as Student Success tutors and mentors who serve full time for 10 months post-graduation to help students expand upon their sense of identity, and build upon their social, emotional and academic skills to achieve their goals!
FACES of the Future Summer Medical Academy
Our two-week program will contain a robust selection of problem-based learning workshops, hands-on learning with a variety of health professionals, and multiple certifications to boost the resumes of our students pursuing opportunities in the medicine and public health fields. We would love for you to share this opportunity with your student and family network, especially if you know of anyone interested in the health profession.
Registration for FSMA is now open. The program will take place on July 8-19, Monday-Friday at Samuel Merritt University in Oakland.
Carnegie Mellon Pre-College Programs
Through Carnegie Mellon's Pre-College Programs, rising juniors and seniors during the summer of 2024 have the opportunity to experience a world-class education on a beautiful, vibrant college campus. Our programs prepare students for their upcoming college experience, help them narrow their career focus, and build critical knowledge and skills. Participants must be 16 years of age by the program start date of June 22, 2024.
Architecture: Introduces design practice, creative problem solving, and critical thinking through a matrix of programming, celebrating curiosity, and providing a strong foundation for architectural education. (5-week program)
Art: Uses both traditional tools and cutting-edge technologies to explore creative ideas in a college-level studio environment. Students develop both conceptual and technical skills preparing them for a wide range of opportunities in both art studies and careers. (3- and 6-week program options)
Computational Biology: Provides extensive training in both cutting-edge laboratory experiments to generate biological data and the computational analysis of that data. Uses real-world scenarios for exploration. (3-week program)
Design: Introduces students to the discipline of Design, provides a foundation of skills, and gives a clear idea of what to expect from a college-level accredited program. (6-week program)
Drama: Prepares students for the college audition and interview process, illustrating the kind of creativity and discipline required of students studying a Bachelor of Fine Arts Drama curriculum. Students will be introduced to the intensity of a top-rated undergraduate conservatory experience. (6-week program)
Music: Immerses high school students in a world-class conservatory experience within an internationally recognized university. The program mirrors the first weeks of Carnegie Mellon’s first-year undergraduate School of Music curriculum. (3- and 6-week program options, commuter part-time option)
National High School Game Academy: Allows high school students to experience modern video game development using industry-standard technology. Students interested in art, music and audio, game design, and software development are encouraged to apply for this interdisciplinary program. (6-week program)
Summer Session: Provides high school students with the opportunity to take summer courses offered by Carnegie Mellon. Students earn college credit while working in an academic setting that mirrors the supportive, rigorous environment of the first year of college. (6-week program)
Writing & Culture: Storytelling is the process of uncovering, understanding, and sharing stories. Whether through words or images, stories unite us and help create a mutual space for understanding ourselves and each other. That’s what the Pre-College Writing & Culture program works to develop: skilled, reflective, engaged storytellers who can share our stories well. (4-week program)
Fully Funded, Merit-Based Programs - Summer of 2024 (no cost to participant)
AI Scholars: Provides opportunities for students who have been historically excluded in STEM to study artificial intelligence with full-time faculty, staff, and researchers who are leaders in the field. (4-week program, rising seniors only)
CS Scholars: Provides students who have been historically excluded in the field of computer science an opportunity to explore the subject with full-time faculty, staff and researchers who are leaders in the field. (4-week program, rising juniors only)
Summer Academy for Math and Science: Allows students from underrepresented communities to develop a deeper understanding of STEM via traditional classroom instruction, hands-on projects, and sustained engagement with world-renowned faculty and skilled staff mentors. (6-week program, rising seniors only)
Alameda County Fair
Our annual summer Fair is just around the corner! We have employment opportunities available to those 16 years & older, for summer employment at our annual Fair. This year the Fair runs from June 14th through July 7th, 2024.
The opportunities include a wide range of positions. Students may also visit our website https://annual.alamedacountyfair.com/fair-jobs/ and fill out our online application and send it in via mail or e-mail it to jobs@alamedacountyfair.com.
Transportation is available from surrounding communities via BART. We provide free shuttle service to/from the Pleasanton/Dublin BART station.

The BOSS Program is for students who are entering 12th grade and have a strong interest in pursuing a business education at the college level

Two-week, residential program, for residents of the U.S. and Puerto Rico, held on Penn State's University Park campus for high school juniors interested in pursuing a business education in college. It’s an opportunity for these students to take college prep and business fundamentals courses taught by Penn State faculty. This is a sample schedule of what the two weeks would entail
Seems free except for $50 registration (after acceptance) and transportation. Financial aid available.

Currently be a junior or senior in high school
Be legally authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship through the end of September of the program year
Be able to participate in an 8-week paid internship at a local nonprofit/charitable organization and work 35 hours a week
Be able to participate in a week-long Student Leaders Summit in Washington, DC (July 22-27, 2024)
Note: All expenses paid as part of the program and the week is counted within the 8-week experience

https://precollege.berkeley.edu/commuter You take classes at UCBerkeley, commute there (BART is easy there from CV) and your college credit is transferable to the college you end up attending. They have a virtual option and a residential option as well, which will have different pricing. With this option, you might look at intro courses like econ, entrepreneurship, etc. These are real classes that undergrads take, not special for high school students.

NASA (below). Other government agencies have business and finance internships as well, open to citizens. Usajobs.gov is the master website for any government jobs. You can also look at agency websites (e.g. FBI, CIA, NOAA, etc). They all have student internship programs, generally require applications 6 months to a year in advance (so you would apply now for stuff after you graduate), and have a few programs for high school and several programs for college students. Getting a government job takes patience with paperwork and planning ahead. The payoff is job security, access to resources/funding, and good pay.

Summer Engineering Seminar at SCU
This outstanding, five-day immersion summer experience is for current high school sophomores and juniors, who are interested in exploring the field of engineering. The program offers specially designed introductory workshops taught by our engineering faculty that are presented as a mix of lecture and interactive work, spanning several fields of engineering. Participants will also get a taste of university life and the academic expectations of college. Along with living in the dorms during the program, students will interact with our faculty, students, and other members of the SCU community throughout the week.
The 2024 SES program will be offered three times over the course of the summer. With the first two session being our introduction program for new participants. Priority goes to Sophomores, with limited space available to Juniors.
Our third session will be our advanced program. Open only to returning program participants from the summer of 2023. Thus, allowing us to offer SES as a two-year program for participants from the introductory program who want to come back during the summer of 2025 to dive deeper into the majors they are interested in.
Participants can apply to attend one of the following two introductory session options:

Girls Who Code
Are you a girl / non-binary high schooler looking for an unforgettable summer experience? Apply for the Girls Who Code summer programs to get the skills, network, and community you need to change the world – for free!
Girls Who Code offers two free program options so students can choose their adventure:
The two-week Summer Immersion Program (SIP) teaches game design using p5.js, a JavaScript library for creative coding. Participants learn with a dedicated Teaching Team and classmates in live virtual classrooms hosted by top companies like MetLife, Bank of America, Logitech, and Synchrony. SIP is open to current 9th-11th grade girls and non-binary students. Eligible students can even apply for a $300 SIP Student Grant and laptop and hot spot access!
The six-week Self-Paced Program lets young people learn to code through independent study and real-world projects. Beginners to advanced coders in 9th-12th grade can earn certificates of completion for courses in our Web Development, Cybersecurity, and – new for 2024 – Data Science + AI tracks!
SMASH Academy at UC Berkeley
SMASH Academy: July 6 - 26, 2024
SMASH Academy, our flagship program, is a FREE, 1-year, intensive CS-focused program that empowers students to deepen their talents and pursue CS careers. Scholars are immersed in tuition-free studies in partnership with leading universities throughout the country for one summer.
During the program, scholars build relationships with facilitators and CS professionals that reflect their same demographics. Because of their common background, students connect more deeply with gain true mentorship from these CS professionals. As they go through the program, scholars not only develop their skills and network – they also further develop their voice and build the confidence to become who they want to be.
How SMASH Academy works
Beginning the summer after their 10th grade year of high school, scholars gain access to the following:
A free summer of residential programming
Computer Science (CS), STEM Workshop, College Success, CS Pathways, and Electives courses
Networking events with CS and STEM professionals
A robust community of peers and support that will last a lifetime
Eligibility
Applicants must meet all the eligibility requirements listed below in order to be considered for SMASH (no exceptions).
GPA: Must have minimum 3.0 GPA or equivalent.
Grade Level: Be in the 10th or 11th grade at the time of application.
Math Skills: Have strong mathematics skills appropriate for your grade level, as determined by your state standardized math test scores.
Attend a public high school or private high school via scholarship.
Location: SMASH Academy will give preference to applicants who attend our target schools. However, if your school is not on the list, you are still welcome to apply.
CS Interest: Must have a strong interest in obtaining a computer science degree or certification and pursuing a career in CS.
Target Applicants
The criteria below describes who we aim to serve, however, applicants do not need to fulfill any or all of the criteria to apply to SMASH.
From groups traditionally underrepresented in computer science: African American, Chicano/Latinx, Native American, Filipino, Pacific Islander, Southeast Asian (i.e. Cambodian, Hmong, Laotian, Vietnamese) or mixed race/multiracial groups with at least one parent from the above ethnicities.
First-generation college students: This means that neither one of your parents received a bachelor’s or 4-year degree (or higher) from an accredited college or university in the United States. If you have a sibling in college, you are still first generation. If your parents took some courses, but did not complete a degree you are still considered first generation
From a low-income family: (e.g. qualifies for Free or Reduced Lunch program).
RECLAIM FEE (Freedom and Equity in Education)
RECLAIM FEE (freedom & equity in education) is an organization dedicated to helping low-income, first-generation, and immigrant high school students succeed during high school and beyond.
They created an online resource for marginalized students. It includes a list of 100+ free summer programs and a library of online competitions that students can participate in from home (many offer monetary rewards). Additionally, there is a list of summer programs that provide immigrant students with scholarships.
Inspirit AI Scholars Program
The Inspirit AI Scholars Program is an intensive two-week project-based learning experience in computer science and artificial intelligence. Students will begin by learning the fundamentals of computer programming in Python before applying concepts of artificial intelligence to their topic of choice in small group projects. Previous project subjects have included COVID-19 genomics, criminal justice, autonomous driving, mental health, and algorithmic training. Additionally, many students who have participated in the AI+X Individual Research Mentorship have gone on to win prestigious awards at various science fair competitions!
The AI Scholars Program at InspiritAI is a unique offering that empowers high school students around the world to apply artificial intelligence and computer science to their work across disciplines. The program emphasizes project-based learning and encourages high schoolers to seize on their interests and conduct socially-impactful research in their field of choice. Previous students have covered topics ranging from software and electrical engineering to transportation and civil engineering.
Program instructors hail from premier universities such as Stanford, Harvard, and MIT and are available as mentors to participating students. By interacting with their instructors as well as peers of similar interests, high school students develop an understanding of how to make an impact in their field of choice using powerful tools such as artificial intelligence and machine learning.
Youth Activism Internship
TurnUp is a 501(c)(3) non-partisan non-profit organization dedicated to increasing youth civic education, empowerment, and engagement!
The program's format is tailored to accommodate the ever fluctuating commitments and responsibilities of a student's lifestyle, our program is fully remote, has rolling admission and has a flexible time frame and schedule. All students have access to grow into more capable and responsible citizens and to develop their professional skills for a successful future.

Factory Farming Awareness Coalition
Advocacy Institute
Are you interested in learning about the impacts of industrialized agriculture on social justice, public health, animal rights, and sustainability? Would you like to advocate for more just and sustainable food systems? Then consider applying to the FFAC National High School Advocacy Institute.
The program includes readings, discussions, and workshops on the impacts of factory farming, related oppressions, and effective advocacy. You will work on strategy to educate and activate your own community. We are especially looking for students from underrepresented communities and those active in environmental and social justice movements.
