Native Americans Meet Europeans Inquiry

Day 1 (8/17):

DUE: U.S. map (political side should be labeled and fully colored)
Brainstorm the Characteristics of a civilization
Small Groups: Read about and take notes on the Native American region you are assigned, using your TCI text, Newsela article, and supplementary books.
HW: Study states 1-17

Day 2 (BLOCK: 8/18 & 8/19):

Review States
Finish Native Americans Regions Notes
Begin labeling the U.S. Map Physical Features and color map by elevation
HW: Study States 1-17 (QUIZ THURSDAY!)

Day 3 (Thursday, 8/20)

QUIZ: States 1-17
Answer Questions 2-4 on class handout
Small group: Discuss findings in Native American groups - divide your group in half and plan who will say what in the team debate tomorrow.
Finish coloring your physical features map, if time

HW: Finish your U.S. map, if needed (DUE FRIDAY)

The First Americans

Day 4 (Friday, 8/21):

DUE: United States Map

Debate part 1 (approximately 10 minutes)
Debate part 2 (approximately 10 minutes)
Answer evaluation questions on handout. Hand write the extended paragraph (question #5) and attach to the back of your paper.

Extended Paragraph Breakdown:

Part 1: Based on your research, do Native Americans in these regions qualify as civilized? Explain your case, providing specific details as support. Include as many features of a civilization as possible in your supporting evidence.

Part 2: Conclude by asserting whether or not European conquest can be justified. If you feel a group was lacking in certain areas, does that justify them being overtaken? Explain your thinking with examples (may be hypothetical). This should be MULTIPLE SENTENCES!

Turn in handout, extended paragraph, and notes at the start of class on Monday, 8/25
