We are excited to invite Grades 3–5 families to join in this year’s family read-aloud: Mr. Popper’s Penguins! This delightful and humorous classic follows the unexpected adventures of Mr. Popper and his lively troupe of penguins, offering families a chance to laugh together, spark imagination, and reflect on themes of creativity, responsibility, and adaptability. We strongly encourage families to set aside time to enjoy this read-aloud experience, using it as a springboard for conversation, connection, and the shared joy of a great story.
Grade 5 will independently read 2 books and complete the ScrapBOOKIt Project for one of the titles listed below:
Just So Stories by Rudyard Kipling *Please only select this abridge/adapted version of the book.
ISBN: 978-0141321622
AND
ScrapBOOKIt: Complete for Either 5th Grade Summer Reading Title
You will be creating ONE scrapbook page for only one of the required Grade 5 summer reading titles. Your project will be due on the day you return to school.
Here are the instructions for the project (click on the image to the left for a printable set of instructions):
1. Use a 12 X 12 piece of scrapbook paper. If we all have the same size paper, we can bind it into a scrapbook album for future 5th graders!
2. You can choose to do your scrapbook page on a particular scene, chapter, or character in the book, or you can do it over the whole book! You must give your scrapbook page a HEADING, though, so the reader will know what selection you have chosen.
3. You must have at least TWO pictures on your scrapbook page and a printed explanation of the pictures (why you chose them) on the page.
4. Your pictures may be drawn and colored, magazine cut-outs, computer-generated (colored, please), or stickers. Just about anything is acceptable!
5. Be sure to check your punctuation and spelling … you want to start with a good impression, right?
Have a fun summer and happy reading!
