We are excited to invite Grades 3–5 families to join in this year’s family read-aloud: Mr. Popper’s Penguins! This delightful and humorous classic follows the unexpected adventures of Mr. Popper and his lively troupe of penguins, offering families a chance to laugh together, spark imagination, and reflect on themes of creativity, responsibility, and adaptability. We strongly encourage families to set aside time to enjoy this read-aloud experience, using it as a springboard for conversation, connection, and the shared joy of a great story. Students will also complete the Rookery Project and turn it in to their teacher by the first Friday of school (see instructions below).

CTCS Summer Reading 2025: Grade 3 Rookery Project
Let’s make a penguin rookery! A rookery is a place where penguins make their nests. Captain Cook’s rookery is in the icebox, and it looks like this:
Two spools of thread, one white chess bishop, and six parts of a jigsaw puzzle … A teaspoon, and a closed box of safety matches … A radish, two pennies, a nickel, and a golf ball. Two pencil stubs, one bent playing card, and a small ash tray.
Five hairpins, an olive, two dominos, and a sock … a nailfile, four buttons of various sizes, a telephone slug, seven marbles, and a tony doll’s chair …
Your summer reading project is to make a rookery for your penguin! Fill out the question page below and bring it in with your rookery. You can use any materials you would like. Your rookery should be turned in to your teacher by the first Friday of school. Click here for printable instructions and the question page.
