Sofie Santucci, originally from Palm Springs in Southern California, recently relocated to Honolulu, HI. She opted for Cal State Monterey Bay's MBA program due to its asynchronous online platform, which allowed her to pursue her master's degree while juggling her professional commitments. The program's emphasis on responsible business and the "Quintuple Bottom Line" of Profit, People, Planet, Ethics, and Equity deeply resonated with her passion for ethical business practices and societal impact. Sofie graduated from CSUMB in December 2023. Her advice to fellow students centers on embracing uncertainty and staying true to their passions.
In addition to her academic achievements, Sofie was selected as one of the campus delegates for the CSU student research competition, taking place on April 26-27 at CSU Cal Poly SLO. Competing in the Business, Economics, and Hospitality Management category, Sofie demonstrates her dedication to advancing knowledge and fostering innovation beyond the classroom. Sofie encourages students to get involved in research studies, stating, "Working on a research study gives an in-depth application and supplements traditional lecture settings. Research experience has enhanced my learning and professional endeavors. A classroom and simulations can only take us so far in our learning, but participating in applicable research science provides a great payoff both academically and professionally."
Beyond academia, Sofie is deeply involved in market research and user experience research. Her research explores the influence of mindset on perceptions, particularly in educational videos, and integrates AI technology in video development. Additionally, she co-founded a software start-up aimed at democratizing indie video game development. Her long-term aspiration is to establish a successful business model supporting aspiring creatives and developers in the indie game industry.

Aaron's enthusiasm for his academic pursuits and community involvement encapsulates the essence of leadership, perseverance, and inclusiveness that the scholarship embodies.
Aaron Villarreal's story is about embracing diversity and opportunities. His journey began in the small town of Lemoore, CA, near a U.S. Naval Air Station. His decision to transfer to Cal State Monterey Bay was driven by his appreciation for the exceptional sense of community. Aaron shared how growing up in Lemoore shaped his perspective and goals.
"One important thing I gained from my experience in Lemoore was not only the tight-knit community but also the number of farm workers and field workers you would see around the town. We were heavily based on agriculture, and seeing the hard-working efforts of these individuals consistently providing for their families moved me. I believe my hometown shaped me by teaching me how dedication and a hard-working mindset are important for success. Those working in the fields still find the most joy in family and community while enjoying life's small, ordinary events. With this in mind, I constantly remind myself of where I come from and who I represent––that community of farm workers and field workers who are out working for their families."
Aaron recognized the opportunities that Cal State Monterey Bay presented. It stood out as a place where he could thrive both academically and personally. He appreciates the university's commitment to serving its Hispanic student population, a demographic that resonates deeply with his own background and values.
Raised by a father who was a first-generation college graduate, Aaron draws inspiration from his family's journey. He recognizes the importance of representation and diversity in higher education, echoing his father's dedication to supporting first-generation and low-income students at the community college where he works.
Aaron was drawn to the prospect of contributing to the growth and development of a university that prioritized the success of its students. As a junior majoring in Business Administration with a concentration in accounting, he has embraced his leadership role by participating in campus leadership roles. Currently, he is deeply involved in Associated Students, where he has taken on the role of Vice President of University Affairs. He collaborates closely with various senators. Drawing from his past experiences as a student trustee and President, he recognizes the importance of advocacy and representation in fostering an inclusive campus environment. He recognizes the scholarship's profound impact in helping reduce financial burdens, especially with textbook costs and transportation. Despite the hurdles of being a transfer student, Aaron's resilience shines through as he navigates his academic and extracurricular commitments with determination.

This decision has since proven to be a wise one for her. Read more about Paige below, where she shares insights in a Q&A-style interview.
What is your current job, and what do you enjoy most?
I am currently a Catering Sales Manager at Bernardus Lodge & Spa in Carmel Valley. The most enjoyable part of my job is working with the client to make a vision for their event a reality. This is especially true for weddings; being part of creating a magical day for the bride and groom is something truly special. People travel from around the world to visit his area, and I consider myself extremely lucky to be able to sell the beauty of my hometown for a living.
What inspired you to pursue a career in hospitality/tourism?
I grew up in the Monterey area with my dad, who worked in fine dining for most of my childhood, and I was always mesmerized watching him work. He glided from table to table with ease, offering smiles and laughs to familiar faces, and he showed empathy and compassion to others. Overall, I saw how he made each table feel special as if they were the only ones who had his attention, and that is a feeling I wanted to create for people every day. Growing up in an area so rich in hospitality made it easy to pursue my passion of connecting with people without leaving the beauty of such a unique and special place.
Can you share a memorable experience or interaction with a guest that made a lasting impact on you?
At the first wedding, I worked alone, and the bride and groom thanked me by name during their welcome toast for helping make their day everything they hoped it would be. This isn't standard practice, and I certainly wasn't expecting that level of acknowledgment; hearing how I had positively impacted their experience gave me all the confidence I needed to know I chose the right career path.
How does your role in the hospitality sector contribute to creating a positive guest experience?
I have a relationship with the client from the initial inquiry I receive to the day the event is executed, meaning I have many opportunities to create positive experiences for my clients. Working in weddings means working with people on one of the most important - and stressful - days of their lives. As challenging as those moments can be, it's important to remember that it isn't about me. It's about showing patience, empathy, and understanding. It's about reassuring them that their day will be as magical as they imagined. My job is to make what can be overwhelming seem like a walk in the park. If I can do that, then I've done my job well.
In what ways does your establishment prioritize sustainability and responsible practices?
Bernardus Lodge & Spa is a culinary destination, and we place sustainability at the forefront of our food practices. Our executive chef, Christian Ojeda, works with local farmers and foragers to provide the freshest and most local ingredients possible. This also helps reduce carbon emissions and excess packaging used in food shipments. We have acres of gardens on the property, and we source seasonal ingredients for the restaurant, including artichokes, stone fruit, citrus, lavender, and pumpkins. In the lodge, we have eliminated single-use plastics for toiletries in guestrooms.
What do you believe sets your establishment apart from others in the industry?
Bernardus is like no other venue in the area because of the amazing staff. I believe it takes a special kind of person to work in the hospitality industry, and Bernardus has managed to fill its staff with those special people. One of our banquet staff has worked on the property for over 20 years with no plans of stopping anytime soon, and he treats every guest interaction like it's the most important one he'll have all day. Bernardus embodies what it means to give good hospitality.
How did the Sustainable Hospitality Management program prepare you for your career in the hospitality industry?
The SHM program helped me feel confident shifting gears from the restaurant side of the industry to events. My classes in event management have helped me in the event planning process and working with staff on the day of. Above all else, the SHM program made me feel supported and guided throughout my college journey and afterwards. Whether it be resume guidance or help creating industry connections, I have always thought that I had an ear that would listen and a person who cared in this program.

Karla Corres Luna is from Oaxaca, Mexico, where she spent her early years before moving to Seaside, California. Growing up in Seaside, she attended middle and high school, eventually pursuing her higher education at Cal State Monterey Bay. Despite the location change, Karla considers Seaside her second hometown.
As a first-generation Latina, Karla began her academic journey at CSUMB as a freshman, choosing not to transfer from a community college. She decided to attend CSUMB due to encouragement from her family to stay close to home, a decision she later appreciated for the opportunities it offered. During her undergraduate years, Karla took advantage of various opportunities, including a congressional internship through the Panetta Institute for Public Policy and a study abroad program in South Africa. Active involvement in campus organizations like MEChA complemented her academic pursuits while benefiting from family support and the cost-saving measure of commuting to campus.
Karla's academic path naturally led her to Business Administration with a concentration in Management and International Business. Coming from a family of business owners, she was deeply influenced by her relatives' entrepreneurial endeavors, ranging from her grandfather's agricultural pursuits in Oaxaca to her father's shipping company bridging Mexico and the United States. This upbringing instilled in Karla a profound appreciation for the potential of business to foster international connections and opportunities.
Karla graduated in Spring 2017 from CSUMB, a milestone she achieved with invaluable experiences and insights gained throughout her academic journey. Reflecting on her time at CSUMB, Karla offers sage advice to fellow students, urging them to seize every opportunity, get involved in campus activities and organizations, volunteer, and network extensively.
In a recent development, Karla received news of being awarded the prestigious Garcia-Robles Fulbright Scholarship, a significant academic and personal accomplishment. This opportunity, which was encouraged by Fullbright Scholar and College of Business Professor of Marketing Dr. Jenny Lin, will afford her nine months in Mexico to conduct research for her dissertation. Beyond the educational realm, Karla sees this as a chance to reconnect with her Mexican heritage and explore a facet of her identity that remains unexplored. She eagerly anticipates delving deeper into her roots and understanding what it truly means to be Mexican, both in Mexico and abroad.

Leveraging her experience as a former Kodak executive and chair of the Monterey County Red Cross, Sharon Crino has led the in-class mentoring initiative at the College of Business in CSUMB for the past several years. By inviting experienced business leaders to share their career journeys and engage in small group discussions, the idea is to demystify career paths by making mentors more approachable for students. The goal is to help students break down barriers to career planning by opening their minds to a variety of career possibilities and catching the vision for their own successful future.
Mentorship mission: Empowering future leaders
“I don’t want anyone to have to go through the difficulties I went through coming up in my career. That’s why I’m connecting CSUMB students to mentors while they’re still in college.” – Sharon Crino
Crino works with faculty members at the College of Business to bring 3-5 mentors into each classroom. The mentoring program is integrated into the curriculum, with assignments preparing students ahead of mentors visits. Student feedback shows that it’s an eye-opener and a semester highlight. Mentors love meeting students, with many returning to serve each term.
