Course of Study
Voyager’s science curriculum is based on the Next Generation Science Standards. (NGSS). Through laboratory experiments, reading material, mini-lecture, group discussions, research projects and inquiry, we will explore and investigate:
· Science Inquiry/Scientific Method-review of science vocabulary and inquiry skills
· Engineering Processes- Define problem, design, test and redesign solutions
· Physical Science-Matter and its interactions;atomic structure, physical and chemical properties of matter, chemical reactions
· Life Science- Genetics, natural selection, fossil record, and embryology
· Earth Science- Plate tectonics, cycling of earth’s materials, role of water on earth’s surface and natural hazards
Science Notebook
Using “Best Practice” format, students will have a dedicated science inquiry notebook where observations, reflections, data collection and experiment planning will take place. Materials will be placed in sequential order with a table of contents to refer to. A binder will be utilized for readings, homework and other important handouts.
Class Participation
Observing, writing and discussing about our science concepts are a key part of our class. Students are asked to offer observations, conjectures and ideas to help move our collective understanding of what we are studying. Students will be asked to work with a partner or partners during our investigations. Being flexible, positive, and working effectively during class is essential. There will be occasions when teams are assigned and other occasions where students have a choice of whom they work with.
Homework:
Each unit usually begins with a significant reading, vocabulary review, followed by a project/lab report and a final summative assessment. Typically there will be 1-2 assignments per week in science class. Long-term projects like the engineering task or lab reports will often have specific deadlines for different parts of the project. You can find specific information about assignments in your child’s Google Classroom. Homework assignment due dates are available in the Google Sites calendar.
Assessment
Students are assessed using the CVSD learning targets. Students will receive a scored rubric that shows the score for the specific learning targets attached to the assessment whether it be a project, journal review, lab report, entrance/exit task or summative. Students have the opportunity to improve scores on material that does not meet the target. Engagement in class activities, discussion and homework completion are assessed as work habits. Scores will be recorded in Jumprope every two weeks.
Length of Class
This year students will have science class each day. They will meet every day for 50 minutes Monday-Friday. When additional time is needed for projects, some block scheduling may take place in the afternoon.
Safety in Science
We will utilize lab equipment, tools, technology, and travel around the school grounds to conduct our experiments. Following directions, utilizing equipment properly, wearing eye protection when needed, and being SMART in science is an expectation for all.
