Homework Expectations

Ms. O'Brien's Homework Expectations

  1. Students will often have daily homework assignments Monday - Thursday. If I do not feel as though students are independent enough with a topic for a daily homework assignment, I will not assign one.
  2. Students will have 50 minutes of Moby Max each week. The Moby Max week begins on Monday and ends on Sunday.
  3. If a student is not given a daily assignment from the class period, that student should work on completing the weekly assignment of 50 minutes on Moby Max.
  4. Each day, I will write the homework on the board and then post the assignment on Google Classroom.
  5. Students may use their learning log, this site or Google Calendar to see the assignment when at home.
  6. Students will be expected to complete this assignment for the next day. All homework is due the next day unless otherwise indicated.
  7. Homework will be checked in at the beginning of class. I will spot check for accuracy and expect students to show and explain their thinking. I might circle a problem and ask the student to reconsider a solution. They can in the moment review their ideas, get help from a peer, or indicate confusion.
  8. Homework check-in is designed to be an open conversation between a student and me. I can generally identify student misconceptions or struggles and will sort that out with each student as needed.
  9. If a student does not have the assignment completed for the class period, he/she will be asked to come to a support session during lunch and recess that day. This is meant to hold students accountable for a school responsibility, or provide 10-15 minutes of support. The student will receive a full completion score during after completion of this time.
  10. I do not chase students to come in for recess/lunch to complete work. The Jump Rope Score for Self-Direction, a score recorded on Jump Rope every two weeks, will indicate whether a student is meeting the target for homework completion.
  11. If your child has a consistent struggle with homework completion, you will hear from me.
  12. The goal of my homework is for students to build responsibility, know when they do or do not understand something, and explore math independently. If you see tears every night, find that you are arguing with your child, or are seeing great confusion, shoot me an email. I can shift expectations on a case by case basis.
