Voyager 7th/8th Grade Science
Voyager’s science curriculum is based on Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) and the CVSD Learning Targets.Through laboratory experiments, engineering tasks, reading material, mini-lecture, group discussions, research projects and inquiry, you will explore and investigate:
Science Inquiry/Scientific Method-review of science vocabulary and inquiry skills
Engineering Processes- Define problem, design, test and redesign solutions
Physics- motion and forces, light, waves, gravity
Biology- ecosystems, energy flow through an ecosystem, human impact on the ecosystem
Earth Science- Earth’s place in the solar system, galaxy and the scale of space
We will cover these science topics through the following CVSD learning targets:
Developing Models
Constructing Explanations
Using Evidence and Reasoning
Analyzing Data
Planning Investigations
Science Notebook
Using “Best Practice” format, students will have a dedicated science inquiry notebook where observations reflections, data collection and experiment planning will take place. Materials will be placed in sequential order with a table of contents to refer to. A binder/folder will be utilized for readings, homework and other important handouts.
Class Participation
Offering an observation, comment or idea during class discussion is an important expectation of our science class. Listening to others and building knowledge through discussion is a key part of our class. Working effectively with a partner or partners during our experiments is essential. There will be occasions when you will be assigned partners and other occasions where you will have a choice, being open-minded and flexible is essential.
Assessment
Each unit of study will have learning targets that students will work toward mastering that are connected with the Next Generation Science Standards and CVSD Learning Targets. These learning targets will be recorded in JumpRope.
The scores you will see on JumpRope represent the following:
4: Exceeding
3: Meeting
2: Building proficiency
1: Does not meet standard
N: No progress made/ Not turned in
Safety in Science
We will be investigating many new and exciting topics this year. We will utilize lab equipment, tools, technology and travel around the school grounds to conduct our experiments. Following directions carefully, wearing eye protection when needed, and using equipment properly is expected.
Homework
Homework and important information is posted on Google Classroom. Assignments are posted as announcements and students do not pass in their work online. Most of the homework is reading, vocabulary, lab write-ups and reflections. Please make sure to have your child shares their Google Classroom with you.
