St. Scholastica has an exciting and fun opportunity for all faculty, staff, and students. A free summer workshop will be offered on the topic of data analytics. The workshop is intended for people of all skill levels, whether you are new to the topic or have some experience under your belt.
The workshop will begin on Monday, June 22 and run for six weeks, ending on Sunday, Aug. 2. There will be four weeks of instruction and two weeks dedicated to competing in a fun data analytics group challenge. All course materials will be made available through our new Learning Management System, D2L Brightspace. Weekly instruction will be delivered through live 90-minute Zoom sessions. The sessions will be recorded for those unable to attend.
The workshop will be taught by Brandon Olson, David Marc, and Shauna Overgaard, and will offer hands-on exercises using MS Excel and R to prepare, describe, model, and visualize data. Using MS Excel, you will learn how to apply functions and formulas to prepare data and create descriptive and visual summaries. Using R, a free statistical software environment and programming language, you will learn how to write code, create data summaries and graphs, and perform data modeling.
At the beginning of the workshop, learners will be assigned to small groups comprised of faculty, staff, and students. To enhance the application of new skills, learners will complete a weekly ungraded exercise and post results in a discussion forum for group feedback and collaboration. Learners will complete a quiz on the weekly content, which will be reviewed in detail to improve the understanding of concepts and to solidify knowledge.
During the last two weeks of the course, each group will compete in an identical challenge related to analyzing a dataset used for assessing the success of higher education institutions. The challenge is intended to engage our community of learners and to be fun! On the last day of the workshop, groups will post their solutions through a recorded 15-minute presentation and supporting 1-2 page executive summary. The submissions will be evaluated by a panel of judges, each scoring the group projects. After the scores are analyzed, the top three teams will receive prizes!
What better way to spend part of your summer than learning new skills, building camaraderie, and maybe winning a prize? You will walk away from this workshop with a greater understanding of methods and interdisciplinary technology used to analyze data.
