How to Use the Cards

Conversation Art Cards help develop deep connections with others. As we observe art and share our experiences, we grow in our understanding of God and others.

Select the work of art you would like to use for your discussion based on the interest of your audience.

Observe

Look at the art together and begin by asking the first question, “What do you notice?” You can easily expand on that question by asking, “What do you think is going on in this painting?” or “Is there anything you would like to ask the artist?” Be sure and read the attribution of the art work before going on to questions 2-4. Please note that question 3 offers two directions to choose from, a general quote and a Bible quote.

Listen

Pay attention to what people say about the artwork. If you are facilitating the discussion, occasionally restate what someone has said. Listen for a new perspective.

Share

While discussing the topic, share experiences, feelings, thoughts and pictures with each other. Everyone should have a chance to contribute.

Grow

As we journey together while looking at art and discussing vital topics, we hope to grow in empathy, compassion, truth, and peace. Mother Teresa said, “If we have not peace, it is because we have forgotten that we belong to each other.”

You can go through the cards in any order depending on people’s interests, but it may make more overall sense to follow the sequence shown in the Gallery.
