Many paint or sculpt people in contemplation.
What do you think the artist is trying to communicate through the painting and the title?
What problems, concepts, or ideas do you find yourself contemplating?
This is a question that requires careful contemplation by looking at evidence, arguments, and experiences. It involves sorting out our presuppositions and assumptions. It is no easy task.
What questions about the existence of God are you wrestling with?
Did the study help resolve any of your questions?
The hints we have looked at not only shed light on the question of God’s existence but also on the question of “what is he like?” For example, if you believe that God is responsible for the finely tuned Universe, you could logically conclude that God has supreme intellect and power.
For each of the topics discussed: design, cause and purpose, the finely tuned Universe, beauty, consciousness, morality, desire, and miracles, conclusions can be made about the nature of God.
Which of these topics seems most significant to you?
If God is behind these concepts, then what could one say about the nature of God?
The Christian Bible affirms that we can know about God by observing both ourselves and nature: “For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse.” (Romans 1:20). This generic understanding of God that we receive through observation of the natural world is called “Natural Revelation,” but it leaves us with many questions that are only answered by special revelation. Questions and answers about God’s love, justice, goodness, judgment, and reconciliation are found in the special revelation of the Holy Bible.
What are some further questions that you would like to look into? Where will you look?
Based on what we have discussed so far, do you think it may be possible to have a relationship with God?
