Carle Place Soccer is arguably one of the most successful sports in the school. Going on 7 straight county titles and coming off a state championship, the first one in 11 years. Last year's team had an overall record of 17-2-2(9-2-1 in the league), compared to this season's record of 5-6-1 in the league; there is obviously a difference in the records. While it may not be a terrible record, it’s not as successful as last year's team, and a contributing factor to this is the fact that this year the team is a very young team, as a result of graduating 16 seniors last year. Many younger players needed to step up. In one of their more recent games against Oyster Bay, there were a total of 6 underclassmen in the starting 11, which is more than half the starting lineup, and a very large number of young players.
Anthony Maffettone, #14, Sophomore
Nicholas Scaccia, #3, Sophomore
These players have definitely stepped up, but it’s not easy when you lack experience at the varsity level; for most of these players, it’s their first season on varsity. Another contributing factor to the 6 losses is the number of injuries the team has had, which left numerous key players out of the starting lineup. We had the chance to interview two starting sophomores for the team, Nicholas Scaccia (Fullback), and Anthony Maffettone (Winger). When asked how he thinks the team is doing so far, Nicholas said, “We’re having a rough season this year, but we had a feeling because we’re a young team, but I think we definitely have it in us to win a county championship.” Anthony also states, “There was definitely a lot of pressure coming into the season, but you’ve got to build and do what you have to do and just overcome any challenges there may be.”
