Joining Flag Corps or Majorettes (Champerettes)

Each year our Varsity Band has around 22 Flag Corps members and 18 Majorette members enrolled in the course. The teams are co-ed and open to students grades 10-12.  Tryouts occur during the end of January/beginning of February over the span of three days. Teams are selected by Mr. Flygt and current team captains.  We also take 2-4 students to be our drum majors.  Students MUST have space in their schedule to take Marching Band as a class.

Lane Tech Flag Corps Fee: uniform and flag essentials provided by band program.  all other accessories (warm-up, bag, hoodie) covered individually.

Lane Tech Majorette Fee: uniform and baton provided by band program.  other accessories (warm-up, bag, tights, shoes) covered individually.

IN A PERFECT YEAR EVERYONE GETS A MARCHING BAND SHIRT AS WELL

I want to join Flag Corps or Champerettes - what do they actually do?

Varsity Band is one of the most exciting groups that performs at Lane Tech and is something that Mr. Flygt and Mr. Veren both look forward to every day.  It is an honor to perform and represent our school.  We must remind ourselves of this daily!  Lane Tech is one of the few high schools to have a marching band program and we do our best to make it an integral part of the school community.

All performances are mandatory and communication is key.  Regular attendance in class and extra practices is EXPECTED.  Mr. Flygt has the ultimate authority to remove any Flag/Champ member from any performance (any time) for the following reasons: excessive absences, inappropriate behavior, violation of the Lane Tech Student Code of Conduct, unprepared repertoire and/or lack of communication.  Students cannot just show up and expect to be included if they have not been in clear contact with Mr. Flygt and the captains.

Grading is discussed in class and is largely based around preparing for the wide array of different performances as well as the weekly Google Classroom Posts.  Students will be expected to complete GC Questions and will be allowed to make them up throughout the Semester for partial credit.

Uniforms are provided by the band program but there are still some purchases we push onto the team.  This will be discussed and purchased individually by each member.  These items may include: shoes, tights, warm-up jacket, optional warm-up pants, any extra outfit decided by the team.  Any questions can be directed to Mr. Flygt.

Joining Varsity Band is a time commitment but with organization and careful planning it is a lot of fun!  If some sort of conflict arises please let us know about it.  We try to bend over backwards to make it work, but out of respect for everyone's time and the music itself, we have to draw a line somewhere.  #stayready
