Committee Vision: Civic education begins in a student-centered classroom that values students’ identities and enables them to create a sense of voice and agency. It introduces current events, controversial issues, and confronts bias to help students develop a sense of the common good. Civic engagement is continuous and can have a lasting impact if we are mindful of what comes next, and how we capture what we learned, to better inform our future. Through this committee, our goal is to educate young people to develop key leadership competencies, including working collaboratively, critical thinking, and advocacy.
Another important aspect of the Civics Committee is the Student Voice Committee. Student Voice Committees (SVCs) are school-based student leadership teams designed to forge student-adult partnerships in school improvement. As a key partner in school improvement, SVC’s should be a part of school quality assessment, school visioning and planning, and the decision making process.
The SVC works to elevate youth perspective and expertise in understanding the problems schools face, and to strengthen the decisions schools and teachers make. The ultimate goal is to align and fuse together all the student-led committees - the student voice committee with the restorative justice team and the CSI student leadership team.
