Earned Honors Description: All students in World Languages classes will be given the opportunity to work towards passing their French or Spanish courses with honors credits, by completing supplemental activities each quarter.
This course introduces the students to basic vocabulary and fundamental sentence structures in the present and past. Pronunciation, grammar, and everyday vocabulary are stressed as indispensable tools for comprehension and expression. Through listening, speaking, reading and writing activities, students will become familiar with the vocabulary necessary to deal with everyday situations in French. Students will start to develop cultural awareness and the ability to recognize the products, practices, and perspectives of the French culture.
The targeted range of language proficiency for this course is Novice Low-Intermediate Low.

It can also allow for opportunities to travel and work abroad and to better understand the customs of the county and prospective clients.
In this course students will review and build on the vocabulary themes and language structures covered in French I. While learning new vocabulary, students will continue to explore the cultures of French-speaking areas in Europe, Canada, Africa, and the Caribbean. Various listening, speaking, reading and writing activities will help students become fluent in authentic language use situations.
The targeted range of language proficiency for this course is Intermediate Low-Intermediate High.

This course is designed to introduce non-native Spanish-speaking students to basic functional proficiency in Spanish with an emphasis on vocabulary development. Students will learn basic conversational topics, such as greetings and farewells, making descriptions of themselves and others, finding out information, talking about one’s family, ordering food, identifying personal belongings, identifying public buildings and places, making plans, making purchases, etc. The course enhances four skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing. The emphasis is on student-student and student-teacher interactions to simulate real-world situations.

This intermediate course is designed to introduce students to more advanced grammar structures in Spanish with an emphasis on sentence structure and verb tenses. It continues to enhance and further develop the four basic skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing. Students will be able to speak and write in the present tense, past tense, and future tense plus the use of high-frequency irregular verbs. Students will be able to read long passages and write paragraphs and short essays. The course focuses on the communicative-based approach that emphasizes fluency. As a result, students will engage in oral skits that model common real-life situations.

Spanish III builds on the principles taught in Spanish II in order to develop speaking, reading, listening, and writing skills more fully. The course expands on key grammatical points including past tenses, perfect tenses, commands, and the subjunctive mood. Students learn about the civilizations of both Spain and Latin America. Students read and are able to answer questions about selected literature in order to sharpen their comprehension skills.

This course will help prepare students to demonstrate their level of Spanish proficiency across three communicative modes: interpersonal, interpretive, and presentational. This course will cover six themes: Global Challenges, Science & Technology, Contemporary Life, Personal & Public Identities, Families & Communities, Beauty & Aesthetics. Students enrolled in this course will take the AP Spanish Language Exam during the Spring semester in May

This is a first-semester course partnership with Wilbur Wright College. In this introductory course, you will do a variety of interesting, real-world tasks (in Spanish!) that form the “heart” of the curriculum. Some of the tasks in Spanish 101 are: introduce a friend, create a lunch menu, design and present an ideal neighborhood, participate in a contest. You will also have plenty of opportunities to interact in Spanish with your instructor and your classmates, read short stories, listen to popular songs, and do an out-of-classroom exploratory project that connects with one of the thriving Hispanic communities in Chicago. This course is designed for you to truly learn to use Spanish to communicate in authentic, culturally appropriate ways.
