DP: the Extended Essay

What is an Extended Essay?

• It's an independent research paper.

• The goal [of the paper] is not "tell" everything known/read about the subject, it's to add to the current research.

• It is a formal piece of academic writing.

• It is compulsory for an IB Diploma.

• Students receive a teacher-mentor and work within their mentor group.

  • 3-5 hours of contact with your mentor is the recommendation.

• The maximum word count is 4000 words.

• It is assessed externally; students are issued a predicted score at CPP but the final score is issued by an IB grader.
