While we do follow all NYS guidelines for education, and are mandated to ensure that our IB coursework complies with the NYS Board of Regents regulations, we honor the course frameworks IB creates and we apply them to our courses--ensuring that a course meets NYS requirements as well as IB requirements.
The same is true for District policies--we follow them explicitly, but also offer some specific information in the way our Board of Education policies apply to IB Diploma Programme coursework and candidates. The following informaton applies to the application of District policies and how they intersect with IB guidelines.
Admissions Policy:
There are no prerequisites for taking IB Diploma Programme coursework (the only exception being that you'll find better success in math if you've followed a sequence, and more success in Physics with a stronger knowledge of math).
Our programme prides itself on a 'best-fit' policy. This means that we encourage all students to try upper-level coursework. And we are fortunate, in our District, to offer college-preparatory coursework in almost every discipline. If you are stellar at art--try an SL or HL Visual Arts class; you're interested in majoring (or minoring) in business-- try Business Management SL or HL. Computer Science, Design Technology, Ethics, History--we have it all! And many of our courses are concurrently enrolled with CCC courses, offering students another opportunity to earn college credit.
Statement of Inclusion:
IB teachers regularly differential instruction based on students needs. This includes honoring all NYS and District supported testing accommodations. Additionally, students can utilize testing accommodations for internal and external assessments, once modifications have been approved by IB. Please contact your coordinator to ensure modifications have been requested.
Language Support:
Non-native speakers recieve language support in many ways: through ESOL services, through the opportunity to take assessments in their native tongue, and the opportunity to earn a bi-lingual diploma (taking English A and a self-taught Group 1 language). Our students have earned bilingual diplomas in Spanish, French, and Turkish.
Procedure for Registering Complaints & Concerns
All concerns regarding instructional materials should follow the District procedure--beginning with the instructor and the DP Coordinator.
Concerns regarding internal and external assessment scores should be sent directly to the DP Coordinator. The procedure is as follows:
Step 1: Candidates or families reach out to the coordinator.
Step 2: Counseling regardin the score takes place--this determines the score's proximity to the edges of a gradeband, the likelihood of recovering points, and other factors.
Step 3. Once all parties agree, the Coordinator files an Enquiry Upon Results (EUR) request on behalf of the candidate.
Step 4: After the rescore is complete, the Coordinator contacts the family. If the EUR yields no remark, a second request can be submitted.
Once all steps have been completed, if the family is still not satisfied with the performance of the coordinator, the District, or IB. They can make a complaint directly to IBO. Please follow the procedures outlined in this correspondence.
All students are expected to uphold a high standard of academic integrity. This includes ethical and appropriate research as well as appropriately attributing credit to work secured from another author.
All written assessment, including cited material should follow an 80%| 20% rule: eighty percent student original work, twenty percent cited (paraphrased or quoted) material.
This includes resources deemed "great places to start", included but not limited to: general Google searches, Wikipedia entries, and AI (such as ChatGPT).

If students commit Academic malpractice or instances of infringement, the are subject to consequences. These will include a conversation/counseling session with their instructor and the DP Coordinator, a potential loss of credit for an assessment, and/or disciplinary action.
In the 2023-2024 school year, DP teachers are committed to offering students direct instruction for citing, referencing, and using outside materials. Our hope is to teach our students the appropriate methods for conducting and citing so that there are few issues of a misguided academic infringement.
