The CPPHS Library has been Genrefied. That means you can come to the library and easily browse through books of the same genre. Below are the descriptions of each of the genres. To find a book in our library, you can find the genre section that you are interested in and browse through the books in that genre. The adventure genre consists of books where the protagonist goes on an epic journey, either personally or geographically. Often the protagonist has a mission and faces many obstacles in his way.
Dystopian fiction is set in new or alternative worlds, or futuristic societies and is characterized by degradation in values, social hierarchy, terror and oppression. Dystopian is the opposite of utopian. A utopia is the ideal society, perfect in every way. Dystopian fiction is based on the nightmare of a civilization where everything has fallen apart.
Fantasy genre stories revolve around magic or supernatural forces, rather than technology. Stories from the fantasy genre are set in fanciful, invented worlds or in a legendary, mythic past that rely on the outright invention of magic.
Books in the graphic novel genre are novels in comic-strip format that deal with everyday events rather than superheroes. They depict characters and scenes as a normal comic-strip would, with captions for words, but with longer, more in depth stories.
Historical fiction describes fictionalized stories that are set in the documented past. The details of the time and place are usually authentic and accurate and may contain actual historical figures. Other characters, including the protagonist, are often fictionalized.
Horror stories are designed to evoke fear, fascination, or revulsion in the reader. This is done either through supernatural elements or psychological circumstances.
Humor books are those that will cause a reader to smile or laugh out loud at the quirkiness of the characters or stories. It is a genre in which the main emphasis is on humor. Books in this style traditionally have a happy ending.
Mystery books follow a crime (like a murder or disappearance Mystery novels emphasize plot. Usually, the protagonist is seeking an answer to a crime or to a mysterious event. Characteristics of this style of writing include suspense and a fast paced style. Realistic fiction creates imaginary characters and situations that depict our world and society. It focuses on themes of growing up and confronting personal and social problems. This genre portrays characters coming to understand themselves and others.
Romance novels have a central love story and an emotionally satisfying ending.
Sci Fi (or science fiction) genre stories involve strong elements of technology. . In general, the stories center around the effects and ramifications of computers and machines. Sci Fi stories can involve traveling through space, time, or alternate universes, as well as, involve alien life-forms.
Books in the sports fiction genre are made up of stories where a sport has an impact on the plot or main character. In the Sports Genre, the “sport” is the main theme and has to do something special for or be something significant to the characters.
Books in the supernatural fiction genre are made up of stories from themes that contradict the commonplace, natural world we live in. The stories in this genre may contain, but aren’t limited to, such supernatural creatures as: demons, ghost, spirits, zombies, angels, vampires, werewolves, witches, warlocks, shape-shifters, shadow creatures, dragons, elves, trolls, and goblins.
In the Suspense Genre anxiety developed from an unpredictable mystery keeps the reader on the edge of their seat, hooked into finding out what will happen next. Although suspense is a genre in and of itself, elements of suspense can be found in other genres.
In a war novel the primary action takes place on a battlefield, or in a civilian setting (or home front), where the characters are preoccupied with the preparations for, suffering the effects of, or recovering from war.
