This programme has been developed for and with carers to ensure the everchanging health and social care workforce needs are met.
A one-day education session with a further day of practical assessments for care staff that aids them to achieve better outcomes when faced with ill or injured service users. The course ensures a consistent approach to information gathering about a particular incident, including reliable observation tests from supplied standardised equipment. Carers are then able to pass this on to urgent / primary care services by phone in a structured format containing all the relevant information. From this, the receiving clinician can make a more informed, safe, and efficient decision on the appropriate outcome. A better informed clinical triage including all relevant information and reliable clinical observations can lead to a reduction in home visits and 999 calls - this has been demonstrated in our services.
This Program is CPD Accredited and is verified as earning 8 CPD points / 8 hours CPD
Carers are a profession that supports some of the most vulnerable people in society yet are often the most unsupported workforce in terms of investment in professional development. Too many older vulnerable people are transported to secondary care with relatively minor conditions. Care homes are also being increasingly asked to report clinical observations without appropriate training, or consistent/calibrated equipment. This means that the reported results can also inconsistent, unreliable and with weak underpinning governance - potentially leading to the wrong clinical outcome.
CPA have delivered the course to over 200 care homes in a variety of locations throughout the UK. The feedback from students has been extremely positive and measured outcomes suggest fewer patients are taken to hospital as a result
In Doncaster there was a 51% reduction in emergency A&E attendances and a 20% reduction in emergency admissions from the Care Homes that undertook the course.
