This year we launched 'Set Build School' and tasked our second year students to re-create a scene from a well known TV show or film. They were required to work as a group to build, light and photograph a set from scratch, sourcing any materials needed themselves. The experience was designed to give students the experience of a live commercial brief and work together as a team to a demanding deadline with minimal budget.
This group chose to create a scene from #StrangerThings...

Inspired by Cecil Beaton, I took his ‘My Fair Lady’ portrait of Audrey Hepburn and created a more modern twist using a technique called pixel stretch. Pixel stretch is quite simply where you make a selection across the body and then stretch the colours out from your selection, shaping it to a style or pattern to create interest within the image.
During lockdown we were tasked to produce a portrait using the word reflect, this could be taken in any way we like. I decided to take it literally and use various mirrors in my portraiture work, one showing off the model and the other leaving blank for the viewer to decide the story.
I’ve always been interested in using smoke bombs since level one, doing my first shoot with them on an old film camera. I wanted to take this concept and modernise it by shooting it on digital, showing beauty within the colours. I gain most of my inspiration through Instagram and other forms of social media. I saw quite a few of them shooting through glass so I jumped on the bandwagon and decided to pull off a portrait shoot with it still looking natural within the setting.
Due to COVID-19, I had to rethink my original idea of portrait photography and the concept of me growing as a business. Due to these limitations, I thought the best route to take was commercial photography, as I wanted to widen my knowledge of the different lighting techniques used within photography.
I felt like this would still be useful to me, as I could carry over those techniques and display them in my portraiture work, but also allow me to produce client worthy product photos.
The purpose of these photos was to demonstrate that you do not need a flashy studio with the best equipment to produce commercial images. These were all shot on my bedroom floor using a single flash unit and some white paper as a reflector.

This photo was taken in an attempt to show fairy tales in a different way, a darker way. I named it ‘The Dark Fairy-Tale’. The reason that I did this is because I believe that darkness can often be as dreamy and as beautiful as the typical fairy tale ideas for example, a lot of colour. I took typical fairy-tale ideas such as long dresses, flowers and mysterious locations and showed them in a different way to how you would usually see them. For example I had black roses rather than red.
In this surreal photograph which I created I wanted to show someone stuck between two worlds. I believe in one way or another there are more worlds around us whether they’re ones which we create with our imagination or ones not yet discovered. I wanted to show someone discovering another world, possibly a better one. I also left this image quite open to perception for people to create their own stories behind this photograph.
The film ‘Big Eyes’ is a true story based around an artist who paints portraits of children with huge eyes and this is my attempt at creating a photographic version.
In this self-portrait I wanted to show a personal idea I have. This idea being that everyone has a good side to them but also a darker side. This effect I used to show this was done using long exposure, no Photoshop.
I’m 23 years old and I grew up in London, I lived there for 20 years until I moved to Cornwall in 2017. I am in my final year at Cornwall College and will be going on to study The FDA Photography course here. I specialise in Pet/Animal Photography and this is something I have based my projects around since I started. I am hoping to go freelance and build up my own business around pet photography in the future.

These images were for a self-directed project, I wanted to show the type of photography I want to do as a job, pet photography. I also wanted to show the side of some animal’s people might not like for example the Giant African Millipede, showing people that do keep weird animals as pets.
Project Title: Covid-19 Isolation
"Always Here"
The meaning behind this first final image is that although it may feel like you are alone and trapped inside a bubble at the moment during the virus, there is always someone who is going to be there for you. This is represented by the fish being alone in the bubble and the hand holding the bubble always being there.
Project Title: Covid-19 Isolation
"Dangerous World"
The meaning behind this image is the feeling of being trapped inside our houses because going outside and seeing other people is too dangerous at the moment and could potentially kill us. I have show this by taking a photo from shoot 2 of the tin mine window which represents the house and have it look like its underwater with some fish photos i took from shoot 1, this showing that the inside of the mine is safe but if you go outside you will be in the water which could harm or kill you.
Project Title: Covid-19 Isolation
"Matter of Time"
The meaning behind this image is it's only a matter of time before this virus is gone and we can start to get back to normal and we can see our family and go out to different places again. I have shown this by having Ruby look out into a field with old tin mines in the landscape representing being able to go out and someone walking another dog representing being able to see family again, i have also added a hour glass to the image that represents watching time go on until we can get back to some sort or normal.

This is one of my favourite photos i have ever taken. I was out and about in camborne town trying to capture some nice street images taking inspiration from Sean Tucker and Fan Ho, but slowly the light began to turn softer and softer when clouds started to cover the sun. This meant the use of harsh light in images to create some interesting shadows wasn't possible so i decided to gather my confidence and go ask some strangers for portraits. After a few photos I managed to capture this one, I don't think I have ever been more thankful for a cloud in my life.
When lockdown was put into place, this led me to think of many ways I could continue with my photography. After a few days, lockdown started taking its toll on my mental health and that's when I came up with this idea of being vulnerable at night when all your thoughts are with you when there is nothing to distract you.
These images are from a new way I am looking at photography, I am trying to capture the subject in the way i see them by letting them get comfortable and posing how they want to while giving a bit of direction here and there to still keep that vibe about them that I see. I like this style of photography as it is the fine line between posed photos that are primarily about the looks and the meaningful photos that have some character to them.
This is one of my final images from the FMP project of the first year of photography. I decided to create a netflix show based around a character simon pegg played in one of his movies. I think it went well considering I actually had people asking me how I got myself a netflix show.

These photos are showing abstract expressionism, when I first got this idea I was going to paint on the model but once I thought more about it, I chose to use a projector as it was more logical.
This photograph focuses on the mental health and what it physically does to a person’s health and appearence, I feel that this shoot was really meaningful to me because at that time I felt very passionate about mental health.
This photograph represents yourself being torn apart because of the mental health issues that you are dealing with and I feel the photograph really presented this well.
I liked how my plans to not give this photograph any identity so that people feeling the same way are able to connect with the story behind it, and I wanted people to be able to connect in their own ways with their own feelings on it.
When taking this photograph I was aiming to show coping mechanisms and what someone who’s dealing with mental health feel, so seeing this as if it’s through their own eyes makes the realisation of suffering even stronger.
This photograph is about expressing yourself and letting your true passions and feeling out and not being afraid of being put down for how you want to express yourself and I learnt a lot about different types of photography in the process.

This image was taken during one of the covid 19 lockdown zoom group meetings.
I chose to add color to my balck and white image to show the positives and such a difficult time and how we are all having to make the best of things.
The colour represents the fact that we can still see and talk to teacher on zoom but the black and white is to show that there is sadness ot his as we are not able to socialise as normal in the classroom.
This photo was taken for the commercial project. The viking idea came from my learning support assistant as she dresses up as a viking as part of the LARP group that she is involved with.
This has become one of my favourite photos as it was the first time I had to set the studio up by myself, working out the best lighting to use and where to put it. While editing I decided that it looked better in black and white and much more authentic.
This was one of the photos taken while photographing the hire and beauty students for there project there theme was fairytale and we had to set up the studio to represent that .
This is the first professional shoot I have ever done and I am very proud of it and has become one of my firm favorites.
Taking inspiration from Imogen Cunningham and Michael Faragher I set up my home made studio by getting black paper and sellotaping it to my wall. I really enjoyed this project and I knew from the beginning that I wanted to do this as flowers create mindfulness, reflection and peace which was something that i wanted to show in my work.

I took this photo at the start of my year at college and it was the first time that I had tried long exposure and I believe that the image came out very well especially for my first time trying long exposure. After I took this photo I began to take more long exposure photos and I have always got different ideas in my head for different long exposure shots I can create.
I took this photo for my product photography project and my thought process behind creating it was imagining that i was in the market for selling something and i was trying to make this product stand out and think of something that i had never seen done before and i think i have been successful in what i have created. I created it by waving some tissue around the product and used long exposure while waving the tissue around to create a smokey/ evaporating effect .
I took this photo for my fine art project and the reason i chose to do this particular image was because i saw an advertisement online for a photographer that had done this and i was very interested in how they did it and i thought i would challenge myself to recreate a style f photography that was new and unfamiliar.
I planned to take photographs throughout the course of lockdown and document what it's like and how it has affected my physical and mental health. I wanted my photographs to contain the emotions I was feeling at the time they were taken.
