Legend or Castle Fairytale
Picture Book
Original story received Hugo Award for best novel (1939)
Involves magic, especially appealing when Merlin changes Wart into different animals; the underdog wins in the end
Wart is a lowly squire to his brother Kay, who sits around all day while Wart does all the hard work. One day, a magician named Merlin appears to Wart's brother and father and tells them he must prepare Wart for his lessons. Little do they know that he is destined to be King Arthur, king of England! He achieves this status by pulling a sword out of a stone anvil. The sword's etchings make the pronunciation that he is the rightful heir.
I always liked this story as a child. To me, it's the male version of Cinderella where the underdog steals the show. Children can learn from this story that anyone, regardless of their status, can reach great heights.
