Traditional Folktale
11 Children's Choice (state) awards
It is funny, it has talking animals, and involves trickery
Imagine Pig's surprise when he came calling on Rabbit that instead Fox opened the door! Thinking it was his "lucky day," Fox got to work preparing himself a pork roast. But Pig got a hot bath, a home-cooked meal, and a massage out of the deal before Fox became too tired to eat! So whose lucky day was it really?
I used to read this book to my kids when they were little. They loved it almost as much as I did. I like that it has a twist at the end. The repetition makes it akin to a cumulative folktale, and the trickster pig and the overstated actions of the fox are characteristic of beast folktales. This book is good for teaching inference and drawing conclusions. Ask the students if they think that Bear will be tricked in much the same way Fox was.
