This week, you will continue to learn how to play different rhythms using the bow. As you remember from last week, each type of note has a different length. The amount of bow you should use and the speed of the bow will depend on how long the note is. If you have not done Activity #3 yet, please visit https://sites.google.com/conestogavalley.org/leolaorchestra/orchestra/4th-grade-orchestra/week-3-resources/activity-3 and complete this activity first.
This is called a half note. You might call this note “Ta-ah” in music class. A half note lasts 2 beats long. When you see a half note, play a slow bow. You can play a slow bow by moving your bow slowly from one end to the other end for 2 beats. You should only play 1 note, but it should last 2 beats long. It helps if you think the words “slow bow” while playing this type of note.
This symbol is a quarter rest. It is 1 beat of silence. When you see a rest, pause your bow on the string for 1 beat. You do not have to lift the bow in the air. After you stop your bow for 1 beat, continue on to the next beat.
Once you are familiar with these 2 rhythms, please practice Row 3 & 4 on the “Rhythm Chart”. The rhythm chart is the same handout from last week (found on the Schoology Orchestra group located in the “Resources” tab on the sidebar). You can play these rhythms on any open string of your choice.
When you see a half note (Ta-ah), play a slow bow that lasts 2 beats long. Remember that you should only move your bow once, but it should last 2 beats.
When you see a rest, stop your bow for 1 beat of silence.
