Graffiti Unit
Objective: Students will create their name in Graffiti style. Using their understanding of a Throw/Piece, they will use the elements of art: line, shape, form, and color to complete a finished product of their name like graffiti artists.
Details: Students will learn about the history of street art and graffiti artists.
Students will discuss the legality of graffiti and whether it is or is not vandalism.
Students will learn the basics of graffiti such as “tag”, “throw”, and “Piece”.
Students will develop the skills to create the alphabet and their name using basic graffiti techniques such as “tag” and “throw”
Students will learn about color schemes
Skills Applied: This graffiti-style name project develops artistic, conceptual, and technical skills. Students will explore lettering, line quality, shape, form, and color theory while learning graffiti techniques like “tag” and “throw.” They will practice blending, shading, and composition to create bold, expressive designs. Through discussions on graffiti history, cultural significance, and legality, students will engage in critical thinking. The project encourages personal expression, creativity, and precision in drawing while reinforcing fine motor skills and artistic confidence.
Sewing Plushies
Objective: Students will apply the elements of art (line, shape, form, and color) to design and sew a simple plushie, developing fine motor skills, creativity, and an understanding of 3D art.
Activities:
Introduction to Textile Art:
Discuss the role of textiles in art and everyday life.
Explore artists who incorporate fabric in their work.
Planning & Design:
Students sketch their plushie design, considering shape, form, and color.
Discuss how different stitches (running stitch, whipstitch) affect durability and aesthetics.
Cutting & Sewing:
Students cut fabric based on their design.
Learn and practice basic stitching techniques.
Sew pieces together, leaving an opening for stuffing.
Stuffing & Finishing Touches:
Fill plushies to achieve the desired form.
Add final details (faces, patterns, accessories) using stitching, markers, or fabric paint.

Compare different design approaches and problem-solving strategies.
