Quizzes: There will be 8 quizzes throughout the semester. The quizzes will be over the reading assigned from your textbook so make sure you stay on top of it and look at your syllabus each week for what pages you are responsible to have read. The quiz will take place at the beginning of class and if you arrive late and we have already started the quiz, you will not be able to make it up.
Class Lectures: The textbook is a brief summary of a large time span. Lectures will cover more detail and imagery. You are expected to take notes during class. Individual Art Event: It is very important during this class that we are looking at artwork outside of the textbook. You are required to attend 1 art function at either the Friesen galleries (reception, lecture), the Boise Art Museum, or an architectural site (Boise Cathedral, Capital building). A brief, 1-page response will be required for this event. You will find the response page on Canvas.
Papers: There will be 4 be short compare-and-contrast essays in this class. Each one will ask you to compare two pieces from two different periods and write about the differences and similarities and how those reflect the periods in which they were made.
Exams: There will be a Midterm and Final exam in this course. Both will consist of slide identification through short answer questions, defining important art terms, and a demonstrated knowledge of the defining artistic characteristics of several important time periods covered in the course. The final exam will also be used as a means for assessing General Education outcomes in the course. This will be measured through a final short answer section on the exam where students will be asked to engage with several questions pertaining to the connection between art and our contemporary culture and reflect upon their own ability to actively engage with visual art after this course.
