What are Mapping Guides?
Mapping Guides show the connections between the NC English Language Development (ELD) Standards and the North Carolina Standard Course of Study (SCOS) for English Language Arts, Math, Science, and Social Studies. Mapping Guides can be used to identify the language functions needed to demonstrate understanding of content standards and facilitate backwards planning to develop activities that will promote Academic English use for ALL students.

Select the Mapping Guide for your content area. Mapping Guides cover grades K-12.

In the Mapping Guide, locate the content standard(s) you will be teaching. Then identify the ELD Standard (s) that has been linked.

Example: Using Kindergarten Math Objective NC.K.CC.6, open the Math Mapping Guide, Locate the grade span for Kindergarten, then locate the objective and the linked ELD Standard.
Unpack the ELD Standard using the Unpacking Guide. Look at the Unpacked Language Functions (what language will be used to do) and the "In the Classroom Description". "In the Classroom" provides an example of how students could use the language function(s) in the classroom.

Plan for language use. Identify the nouns, adjectives, and adverbs needed to use the language function. Develop word banks/visual banks to scaffold students. Plan use of manipulatives. Develop models for students to refer to.

Want to know what language use for the function looks like? Refer to the Sample Language Features Guide. The Sample Language Features guide features the types of sentences, cluases, phrases, and words (e.g. nouns, adjectives, adverbs) commonly associated with the function.

Use Sentence Stems to support students in Speaking and Writing. Need examples? Refer to the guide below. Locate the Grade band that matches your grade, find the Content area (e.g. Math), then find the ELD Standard and Language Expectation, and look at the example Frames/Stems.
