Operation Egg Drop was this past Friday, the finale of our unit on Newton's Laws of Motion. Students spent a few days building a landing craft to protect their raw-egg passenger when it was dropped from our second-floor science classroom window. It is a fun, hands-on way to explore gravity and force.
Students were tasked wih designing a landing craft to protect a raw egg as it is dropped from a second-story window. They have a limited selection of supplies (Straws, Plastic cups, Plastic Bags, Tape, String, Rubber bands, Tongue depressors, String, Newspapers, and Balloons) and a three-day window to build and test their designs with hard-boiled eggs.
Our brave, if ill-fated, test pilots are below.
Students then test their designs, and then go back and make adjustments. It is a great exercise in team work, iterative design and problem solving. Parachites, pyramids and balloon bumpers were popular options.
Then it was time for the drop! The students continued the egg naming with the raw eggs. There were a weird amount of Timmys this year.
