Maple Sugaring 2/12

Howell historic Farm

We took a trip to Howell Living Farm to learn how maple syrup is made.

We started by walking across the farm to the grove of sugar maple trees.

Students helped bore a hole in a sugar maple tree to extract sap..

Then we added a steel tap. As the temperature was above freezing (finally!), we were able to taste the sap as it dripped out of the tap.

We then went into the sugar shack to learn how the sap becomes syrup.
