What is AVID?

Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) is a college preparatory elective for students in the Cutler-Orosi Joint School district from grades 6-12. AVID at Orosi High School focuses on helping students be mindful of all the tips and tricks that seem to be the secret knowledge of "good students." AVID believes that anyone and everyone has the ability to be successful academically as long as they have the desire to do so.

Our primary goal for each student is that by the end of four years in AVID, students will have multiple options for continuing education after high school. Choices = Freedom. We want students to be able to choose the best post-secondary fit for them from a wide variety of choices.

Watch and listen to what current and former OHS AVID students say about their AVID Experience!

Watch and listen to Stephanie Figueroa talk about why she joined AVID and what she has gained from this experience!

Stephanie is also in ASB, Leadership, and she has taken college credit courses while in high school.

You can be part of many families at the same time here at OHS!

Listen and watch Jenny Calixto's video where she explains her AVID experience and what she was able to accomplish because AVID supported her throughout her learning.

Jenny was in band and AVID in high school. She participated in many extracurriculars and sports!

Listen and watch Nereyda Uribe explain why AVID has been a consistent support for her college application journey.

Nereyda is taking all the college credit earning classes she can while in high school because she knows her AVID Family will be there to help her when she needs support!

Orosi School AVID 2001 graduate Crystal Alvarez Murillo explains how she uses AVID strategies in her current occupation.

Crystal was in cheerleading, sports, and ASB in high school as well as other community-based organizations.

Giving back to her community is a priority!

Orosi High School AVID 2001 graduate Sylvia Munguia Pittman explains how as a teen mother, AVID provided the support, the guidance, and the belief in herself in order for her to truly know she is capable of and worthy of a college education.

She has her BA, MA, and is considering going back to college to earn her PhD.

Tutorials, WICOR, and Binders! Oh My!

The Cornerstones of AVID in 9th-11th Grades

Click on the links below to learn more about these three important components of school success!

Tutorial Process

Students work in groups of 6-8 students with one college or high school, cross-age tutor. The goal is to help students clear up confusion and learn from peers about the topics in their classes.

The AVID Binder

Learning to be an organized student is key! Organizing our stuff, or ideas, and our time makes good students GREAT students!

Agendas, pencil pouches, and punching holes in paper is in your future with AVID!

Instruction

We know for a fact that students who write, ask questions, collaborate with peers, organize their stuff and lives, and read - every day - are better prepared for college than those who don't participate in thinking using WICOR strategies.
