New York State Education Law 2D requires ALL sites/resources (Free or Paid) that have the ability for students and staff to sign in (Google sign on or otherwise) OR collect personal information to sign an annual District Privacy Agreement BEFORE they may be used. This includes resources previously approved.
Websites, software, extensions, and apps approved by the district must enhance the quality of the learning environment and align with district goals for use of technology.
Technology tools must:
✅ support student learning through instructional technology standards.
✅ support learning outcomes that align with state standards.
✅ support classroom instruction such as research, projects and assignments.
✅ promote collaboration and communication.
✅ maintain system security and promote safe and appropriate use of technology resources.
A website, extension, or app WILL NOT be approved if it:
❌ contains inappropriate content.
❌ runs advertisements.
❌ functions as an online video gaming site.
❌ collects, uses, shares, transfers personally identifiable information.
❌ requires an age limit that is higher than your students' ages.
Resources do NOT require district approval and signed privacy contract if they meet ALL of the below conditions:
Do NOT require OR offer students the option of creating an account
Do NOT collect ANY personally identifiable information (last name, email, student id, address, parent info, picture/video, biometrics (fingerprint, voice, etc), personal questions
Do NOT expose students to advertising
The process depends on whether the service/software is free or has to be paid for.
If the service or software is free, the Approval Process is initiated by the teacher. There is no standard duration for this process to be completed. It will be dependent on the length of time it takes for the vendor to sign the agreement. Both the Interactive Guide and the Software Approval Form references below can be found on the Submit Software page.
If there is a cost associated with the service or software, the Approval Process is initiated by the building principal. Please follow the instructions below.
*If the software is purchased through BOCES, BOCES will obtain the DPA.
