Summer Opportunities

Governor's School

Governor's School is a four-week summer, residential enrichment program for high achieving juniors and some sophomores. Students are nominated by school districts across NC for specific academic areas.

The areas students can be nominated for include: Math, English, Natural Science, Social Science, Spanish, Choral Music, Instrumental Music, Theatre, Dance, and Art. Sophomores are only allowed to apply for Choral Music, Instrumental Music, and Dance.

There are two campuses: Governor's School East and Governor's School West. Governor's School East is located on Meredith College campus in Raleigh. Governor's School West is located on Winston-Salem State University's campus in Winston-Salem.

The cost of attending Governor's School is $500 for the full four-week program.

2023 Governor's School Session: June 18th - July 15th

Selection process begins November-December 2022. Selection notifications are sent in March 2023. 

Summer Ventures

Summer Ventures in Science and Mathematics is a no cost, state-funded program for academically talented North Carolina students who aspire to careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. If hands-on, independent learning is appealing to you, and you are excited about the idea of conducting research to answer questions that intrigue you, this is the program for you! Sophomores and Juniors are encouraged to apply.

Similar to Governor's School, Summer Ventures is a 4-week residential program at four different college campuses: Appalachian State, ECU, UNC Wilmington, and UNC Charlotte. You do not get to choose which campus you attend.

Steps to Apply:

Application is due on January 18th. 

Submit application through CFNC.org. Recommenders submit after application is submitted.

Summer Programs

The Wake Forest Summer Immersion Program offers 9-12th graders the chance to dive deep and explore a particular field of study. It allows students to:

Project Uplift is a summer enrichment and college access program designed to promote and increase access to higher education for rising high school seniors, especially those underrepresented in postsecondary education. Every summer, approximately 1,000 high school seniors participate in one of multiple Project Uplift sessions. Participants learn about the college admissions process, interact with faculty, staff, and current students, and participate in educational, cultural, and social activities. Project Uplift scholars have the opportunity to immerse themselves in college life and experience the academic rigor and social climate of a four-year institution. 

NEW summer immersion experience at NC Central University! This is a partnership with NCCU’s Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Biomanufacturing Research Institute and Technology Enterprise (BRITE). The goal is to expand educational opportunities and provide science and research exposure to more underrepresented minorities by creating a new pipeline of students obtaining degrees in pharmaceutical sciences and clinical research. This program is tailored for rising 11th and 12th graders

TO APPLY: Complete the online application along with a transcript. Letters of recommendation should be emailed to coldham@nccu.edu. Please note proof of COVID vaccination will be required upon acceptance into the summer program. The deadline to apply is March 30th. 

Wingate Summer Experience offers Health Science Academy and Pharmacy Camp programs. Registration opens February 20, 2023. 

Health Science Academy: June 26-30, 9am-4pm $115

Wingate Pharmacy Camp: July 16-20, $400

NC State University offers Pre-College Programs for rising juniors or seniors. Emerging Scholars Academy (ESA) is geared towards students who identify as Black or African-American. CAMINOS: Your Journey to College is geared towards students who identify as Hispanic/Latino. Our pre-college programs provide an opportunity for students to learn about higher education opportunities and cultural reinforcement. Students will find and build a strong sense of community while also preparing for the college application process and university experience. 

Students with a cumulative unweighted GPA of 3.4 or higher are encouraged to apply. Deadline for applications is Friday, April 7th. Visit their website for more information and to apply!
