It is important for your child to wear his/her AFOs to:
Help maintain a good foot position
Provide appropriate ankle stability
Prevent further changes or deformity of the foot
Skin Checks/Red Marks:
Wearing an AFO should not hurt, so if a child complains, the foot should be checked for red marks.
Some redness may be present when the AFO is removed, but should not last for more than 20-30 minutes after removal.
If there are red marks: 1) Check the sock for wrinkles; 2) Ensure the foot is positioned correctly and the instep strap is snug. There should be no movement of the foot in the AFO.
Notify the PT or Orthotist if there are persistent red marks that do not resolve
