Equipment maintenance is important to ensure the safety of your child and to help with maintaining good positioning. Please be sure to regularly check his/her equipment over the summer to make sure it stays in good, safe working order. This will also help with preparing for return to school next year - to ensure he/she is safe for transport on the bus or van and that he/she has good positioning when at school.
Wheelchairs - be sure to check:
Wheel locks: lock and unlock them, make sure they firmly hold the wheels
Lap belts: make sure they sit at the hip bones and fasten correctly
Chest harness: make sure all clips/buckles fasten correctly
Headrest brackets: check that the headrest does not wiggle or move. Check that the bracket attached to the wheelchair is firmly attached
Lateral trunk supports: check that these lock into place to give support to the trunk
Footplates: Check that they are stable and support the foot appropriately.
AFOs and other orthotics:
Straps: Check all of the straps on the brace for fraying and that they stay secured
Rivets: These are the metal pieces that hold straps onto the brace. Check that they are flush with the brace and not poking out.
Foam inserts: Check the integrity of the foam lining the braces to make sure there is no extra pressure or rubbing.
If you notice any problems or have questions, please contact your child’s equipment vendor.
*On wheelchairs, there is typically a sticker on the frame near the back wheels that will tell you the name of the company if you do not know it.
