Whether it be stairs on the bus, in the school, or on the playground....your student will likely encounter stairs somewhere on his or her school campus.
Below are some activities you can work on with your child to improve single leg stance, core control, and coordination - 3 things that are needed to climb stairs.
Work on alternating feet - Use color spots on the steps and step on each one.
You can help facilitate each leg moving forward and up if help is needed.
Use a footstool at a table
Step onto the footstool and reach for an object on the table. Then step back down.
Can do with a puzzle...have puzzle pieces on the table and create the puzzle on the floor.
Use any activity that might be fun - bubbles every time he/she steps up, coloring, stickers...anything that gives motivation.
Practice stepping up and over the footstool - use hands to support if needed.
Single leg stance activities:
Increase the challenge as he/she progresses. Start with standing on the floor, move to standing on pillow, add in toe taps or reaching activities, throwing/catching
Perform with and without shoes on
Have fun!
