What we are learning:
French - We will be continuing our building writing stamina lessons in French. We will be starting book clubs this week and practice the reading strategies that we have been learning. During this time, students will be either reading independently or discussing their book with a small group. I will be meeting with one group each day to teach, reinforce, and assess their reading skills. In grammar, we will be solidify identifying nouns as there are still some mixups with verbs and adjectives. We will also be reviewing the verb AVOIR.
English - We will hopefully be wrapping up reading Anne of Green Gables by the end of next week. At which time, students will write a reader's response and then create a diorama of their favourite scene. We will begin narrative writing this week, starting with a memoir. For grammar, students will be working on punctuation and the spelling rules of the week is the Long O sound.
Math - Students are moving into representing decimals to the thousandths. We will be learning place value, ordering and comparing decimal numbers.
Integrated Curriculum - Students have either chosen or have been given an illness that they will research this week. They will be presenting their findings in front of the class either Friday or Monday. Students may research at home, please have them take notes and cite the website or book where they found their information. Students should know how many people are affected, human systems that are affected, how the illness affects organs, treatment, and name any important person related to that illness. Students will then write in French at school and I will help with structure and editing.

What we are learning:
French Language Arts : We will be learning writing strategies to build up our writing stamina. Students will be learning how to create their best writing environment at school, what to do when feeling stuck, and not to quit. We will be learning reading strategies such as asking if what I'm reading makes sense, reading with a storyteller's voice, and stopping after a chapter to think about what is happening in the story.
English Language Arts : We are building our stamina in English writing as well. Some strategies we will look at will be to set a goal of how much to write, using books and their writer's notebook to spark ideas, and how to identify my writing problem and then solve it.
Grammar : In French we are learning about determinants (le, la, ce, cette, son, sa, mes, des...). In English we are learning about periods, commas, and apostrophes. Students will also be reviewing the Long I sound.
Integrated Curriculum : We are continuing to learn about the human body systems. This week we will touch on the nervous, musculatory, and skeletal systems. Our test has been moved to Thursday, students will be asked to match major organs to the correct system. We will then move into learning about how to keep our systems running well and how they interact together. Students will be preparing a presentation next week about an illness or disease. I will hand out which disease students will research, unless students are interested in one of their choice. Please discuss this with your child.

We're diving into learning right away. Today was the first day of implementing our French speaking program. It is an incentive program that rewards students for speaking French. For the first couple of weeks, we focus on speaking in French. If a student speaks in English and another student is able to correct them in French, the first student hands over a mushroom (tiny figurines). At the end of the week, students trade in their mushrooms for candy. 1 mushroom = 1 piece of candy.
What we are learning this week:
French : In grammar we are learning about parts of speech; proper and common nouns, and masculin and feminine nouns. We will be spending the next two weeks learning strategies about how to become a reader for life. We are also reading Anne of Green Gables. In writing, we are beginning to learn about keeping a writer's notebook and how to come up with ideas to write about.
English : In grammar, we are working on the Long A sound and parts of speech. We are also reading Anne of Green Gables, alternating each chapter in French and English. In writing, we are alternating lessons in French and learning about keeping a writer's notebook.
Math : We are starting the year with learning to represent numbers to 1 000 000. Students will be practicing writing numbers in French, using expanded form, and understanding the value of each position.
Integrated Curriculum : We are learning about the human body systems. We will be focusing on the circulatory system, respiratory system, nervous system, skeletal and muscular systems, and the reproductive system. We had a brief conversation today that explained that I will be teaching about how our bodies change during puberty and naming the organs in the reproductive system. We agreed that it was both an embarassing and uncomfortable topic, but it is something that will be taught. Students have access to books that were provided by the Department of Education and they have been encouraged to ask questions to a respected adult instead of their peers. We will be going into further discussions next week.
September 4th-5th
We've finished our first couple of days of school.
We've been busy getting to know each other and back to speaking and thinking in French for the day. It can be very tiring after a summer away from speaking in French, both mentally and physically.
Thank you so much for all the forms that have been returned so far. Students are to bring their yellow duotang and plastic bag back and forth from school to home each day.
Have a wonderful weekend.
