Aboriginal words and phrases in Ngulu Nganjin
CHPS School Production 2025
The concept of Language for Australia’s First Peoples is different from that of most language groups that people are familiar with in Western cultures.
Language and Culture are inseparable. Languages are the cultural heritage of our First Peoples. This living heritage belongs to Country, while communities, clans and families have a responsibility to care for and look after it. It is transmitted between generations and includes cultural knowledge, sites, land, seas, objects and ancestral remains, literary, performing and artistic works. Collectively, this heritage is known as Aboriginal Cultural and Intellectual Property or ACIP. Western copyright laws will not adequately protect Aboriginal language.
Non-Aboriginal people and organisations have ethical obligations to collaborate with and seek permission from the Aboriginal Language Custodians if they would like to learn about and use this ACIP. This is done through relationship-building, consulting and collaborating.
CHPS has been gifted the language in this document by numerous generous, fun, kind and intelligent Aboriginal collaborators.
We are encouraged to feel the language, try the language and use the language for our Production, in our classrooms, and in our community for our learning.
Please see the ‘Special Thanks’ page for a list of our Aboriginal Cultures and Languages collaborators.
List of Aboriginal words and phrases in Ngulu Nganjin
* Pronunciation notes were designed to facilitate a little more accuracy for students and teachers when using the language. They are casual and observational notes as opposed to using the science of linguistics. They are included only for the words and phrases that students had difficulty pronouncing. Some recordings were also used for the purposes of rehearsals but they are not included here.
