Discoverery: Radium was discovered in 1898 by Polish chemist, Marie Curie and French Chemist, Pierre Curie. Marie Curie obtained radium from pitchblende, which contains uranium, and noticed that unrefined pitchblende was more radioactive than the uranium that was separated from it.
Properties/ Reactions
Radium is silvery, lustrous, soft, and intensely radioactive. Radium is also luminescent, and corrodes in water to form radium hydroxide. It oxidizes on exposure to air, turning from almost pure white to black. It is the heaviest member of the alkaline-earth group, but it is the most volatile.
In the United States, Radium is found in the Carnotite sands of Colorado. However, richer supplies of Radium exist in regions of Africa and Canada.
