THE CAB CHALLENGE PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
#OneScholarOneCab
The CAB Challenge Program is part of the District’s efforts to foster school connectedness by establishing a formal structure that will ensure that each scholar is connected to a Caring Adult in the Building (CAB). At the heart of school connectedness is the healthy relationship developed between staff and scholars.
According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the scholars who feel connected to school are:
More likely to attend school regularly, stay in school longer, and have higher grades and test scores.
Less likely to smoke cigarettes, drink alcohol, or have sexual intercourse.
Less likely to carry weapons, become involved in violence, or be injured from dangerous activities such as drinking and driving or
not wearing seat belts.
Less likely to have emotional problems, suffer from eating disorders, or experience suicidal thoughts or attempts.
THE CAB CHALLENGE PROCESS
The overarching goal of the CAB Challenge Program is to connect each scholar to a CAB to increase the scholar’s sense of belonging and the feeling that someone cares about him/her as an individual.
Administrators will begin the CAB Challenge process by assigning a CAB to each scholar in the building.
CAB will check in with assigned scholars at least twice each semester, but the scholars are free to contact the CABs as needed.
CABs will document contacts with Scholars in the CAB Challenge Contact Log in IC.
Scholars will complete "Student's Perception Survey" at the end of each school year to determine the extent to which the program objectives were met.
THE ROLE OF A CAB
The CAB's responsibilities include:
Serving as the scholar’s coach and an extra life line in the
building.
Driving the scholar's “education car” WITH the scholar by
checking in with the scholar at least once a month to
offer guidance and support as needed.
Continuing to hold the scholar’s hand as he/she navigates
the educational process to ensure that he/she continues to
thrive.
Take steps to refer the scholar to Circle of Support
(CoS) for additional support as needed.
