Hi KLO Families!
Our Cubs have a busy month ahead! Here are a few important highlights.
Different Circles. One Community.
During the month of February, we will be connecting our schoolwide theme, Connected in Every Circle, to the unity of the Winter Olympics with the focus Different Circles. One Community.
As students learn about teamwork and global connection, they will have opportunities to earn gold medals for following expectations and strengthening our school community. We would also love to celebrate the diversity of our families by sharing multicultural greetings throughout the month. There was an email sent earlier today to sign up.
If your family speaks multiple languages and your child would like to participate by sharing a greeting, please let us know—we would be thrilled to include them!
Special Lockout Drill
We want to prepare you with information so you can support your student ahead of our Standard Response Protocol drill for Lockdown on February 5th.
This is only a practice where staff and students will follow the instructions “Lockdown. Locks, lights, out of sight.” When we use the Lockdown protocol, that means something of concern is happening inside the school. We clear hallways, lock classroom doors, turn off lights, and students are out of sight of any windows in the classroom.
During our drill in February, we will have special guests to observe our drill. The Lincoln Police Department will be here to watch how we handle a Lockdown, and at no time will they use their weapons or will we role play an actual threat.
We understand how hearing the word “Lockdown” may cause concern about your child’s safety. The safety of our students and staff is our top priority, and safety drills help our staff and students be prepared for any situation. We are taking this opportunity to remind you about our Standard Response Protocols.
You can learn more about all of our Standard Response Protocols and School Safety on our LPS website. We encourage you to take a moment and review these resources with your child. And please reach out if you have any questions, please contact me at school.
🎉 Celebrating Quarter 2 Success! 🎉
➕📏 93% of students are meeting grade-level expectations in Math!
📚✨ 92% of students are meeting grade-level expectations in Reading Comprehension!
🏫👏 94% of students have maintained strong attendance, missing fewer than 10% or 8.5 days!
Our instructional focus this year is fluency. Reading and rereading familiar texts at home is a powerful way to support your child’s growth. Keep up the great work, Cubs!

It’s time to register your kindergarten student for 2026-2027!
Do you have a child - or do you know of a child - that will start kindergarten next year? Lincoln Public Schools is now accepting kindergarten registrations for the 2026-2027 school year.
Parents of children turning five years of age on or before July 31, 2026 can go to lps.org and click on the red “Enroll Your Student” button. Here you will also find all the information necessary for registering, the required documents needed and answers to frequently asked questions.
For children who turn five between August 1 and October 15, parents may request an assessment for their child to receive a waiver to attend school early. That information is also located on the kindergarten registration page.
Parents who do not have access to the online registration, or wish to register their child in person, should contact their attendance area elementary school as soon as possible. Questions about kindergarten registration should also be directed to the child's attendance area school.
For more information about kindergarten registration and assessment testing for incoming students, please go to: https://home.lps.org/studentservices/kindergarten-registration-assessment/.

Multicultural Greeting
Do you speak multiple languages at home? Would you like an opportunity to celebrate your family's culture or background? Would your child like to share a greeting with our school community? We need your help! Inspired by the spirit of cross cultural connection and unity that comes with an event like the upcoming Winter Olympics, we would love to share, highlight and celebrate the many different cultures, languages, and traditions that make up our KLO community!
We are looking for Kloefkorn cubs who are willing and able to share a greeting in a language other than English via the morning announcements. This language could be one that is spoken at home or perhaps is important to the identity, culture or background of your family!
Please help us in highlighting and celebrating our differences, our differences are what make our community strong and beautiful! Thank you for helping us celebrate the amazing diversity that makes up our KLO community!
*If your student would be interested in sharing a greeting with our school community in a language other than English please fill out this GOOGLE FORM. If we have enough interest/ participation we will have students read a greeting on the morning announcements.

Dressing for Winter
We have now entered the time of year where temperatures can fluctuate greatly. It's important for our students to dress for the weather. The temperature and weather conditions are the determining factor on inside or outside recess. Have your student dress in layers with hats, gloves and warm coats so we can be outside as much as possible. Thanks for your help!

Friday Pencil Winners
We appreciate all of your help in keeping students and staff healthy so everyone can learn and play their best! We are still in the thick of sick-season, so a few important reminders:
🤒Keeping sick children home helps them recover faster and prevents the spread of germs to classmates, teachers and staff. Please keep your student home if they have any of the following:
Fever (should be fever-free without the use of fever-reducing medication for 24 hours prior to returning to school)
Vomiting or diarrhea (should be vomiting and diarrhea-free for 24 hours without the use of medication before returning to school)
Pink/red eye(s) with drainage or crusting
A persistent cough
🧼Handwashing makes a BIG difference! Good handwashing is one of the most effective ways to stop the spread of illness. Please help your student learn and practice thorough handwashing at home. Remind your student to wash their hands well before eating, after using the restroom, after coughing or sneezing and when they return home from school! Clean hands protect everyone!
☀️IMPORTANCE OF FRESH AIR
Fresh air is a natural brain booster: Just 15 minutes of outdoor time can reduce mental fatigue and improve a student’s concentration and focus on schoolwork.
Enhances Immune Function: Breathing fresh outdoor air provides higher oxygen levels that fuel strong lung function and helps to strengthen the body’s natural immune defenses.
🧤Students go outside during the school day, most days. Please encourage your student to wear a coat, gloves, boots, etc if the weather is chilly. School Administration will determine if the weather is too cold for students to be
outside.
As always, thank you for partnering with us to make our school a healthy and happy place this winter!
💙Ms. Kelsey
Classroom lessons: To start off the quarter, all classroom lessons Kinder-5th grades have focused on problem solving - we have worked on identifying the problem, thinking about the size of the problem (can I solve this/try to solve this by myself or do I need help), and brainstorming problem solving strategies for specific situations.
School needs: As we have transitioned back to school after winter break and a few long weekends, we have noticed an increase in the number of students that are having a harder time in the mornings getting to school, or that are sad while at school. Encouraging your child to share how they’re feeling and reminding them it’s okay to have mixed emotions about returning to school may be helpful. Many times this feeling is communicated to staff as feeling “sick” as it can be hard for kiddos to tell the difference between sick or sad. A calm morning, positive words, and a reassuring goodbye can go a long way in helping children feel safe, confident, and ready to learn. Please never hesitate to reach out if this is something your student is struggling with, as we want to help support your family and ensure your student is feeling confident entering our doors!
Conferences: I will be available both nights of conferences coming up in February! I am typically in my office for conferences (#155 - between 3rd and 4th grade classrooms). If you would like me to join in on your student’s conference, schedule a time with me on either of those nights, or just want to pop by to chat or say hello - I would love to connect with you!
🤩Global greetings: Finally, inspired by the spirit of cross-cultural connection and unity that comes with an event like the upcoming Winter Olympics, we are hoping to share, highlight, and celebrate the many different cultures, languages, and traditions that make up our KLO community! If you speak multiple languages at home, and your child would like to share a greeting with our school community via the morning announcements, be on the lookout for an email coming your way soon regarding a link to a google form!

LPS teaches students media literacy skills. Ask your student these questions to find out what they are learning:
What is a fact? What is a viewpoint? How are they different?
What should we do if we want to see if something we read online is true?
What should we do if someone's facts disagree with ours?

There are many "layers" of digital protections that follow your student as they progress through their life in LPS. Informed by federal/state laws, and guided by LPS Board of Education policies, the District builds a digital "walled garden" where students are able to collaborate with peers and teachers, while also keeping their data secure.

Yearbook Photos Needed
Have pictures from school activities? We want to see them! The best way to make sure your child is in the yearbook is to send pictures to kloefkornyearbook@gmail.com. (Send pictures of your child during school activities, such as recess, field trips, classroom parties, first day of school, etc.)
Join the PTO today!
When you join PTO, you make a difference in your child's education! Make sure to join PTO for the 2025-2026 school year. Dues are only $15 and help us meet the needs of all our students! The student directory is also available online for paid members.
Sign up at kloefkornpto.ptboard.com.
The student directory is managed by our PTO as a service to our families. We only provide the student directory to paid PTO members. You can do this on the Forms & Payments page of our website and then find the PTO Membership Form on the left hand menu. Membership is for the current school year and costs $15 per family annually. (Note: our website will roll over to the next school year in July and the directory will not be available after that time.)
The $15 annual membership fee helps support various school programs and staff appreciation efforts. The directory is kept behind a membership to protect the privacy and contact information of our families, and it provides digital access (email and phone) which can help families avoid the costs of physical mail.
Most importantly, please know that we never want a financial barrier to prevent a family from participating in our school community. If the membership fee is a hardship for your family, we have a process in place to accommodate those who need assistance. Please feel free to respond directly to this email, and we will ensure you have the access you need.
Once membership dues have been paid, you will have access to the directory. The directory can be found using the left hand menu of our website, and click on the 'Student Directory' tab. The directory is uploaded each year in the fall, and new students are not necessarily added to the directory, unless their parent/guardian adds them directly.
PTO Events
This year we are trying out a new system of volunteering for the events put on by the PTO. Each grade will be in charge of hosting an event. Don’t worry, you will not be alone! Each event will be led by a PTO board member. If you are unable to help out with your child’s grade’s event, help is welcome from anyone who would like to join in for any of the events. Below are the PTO events this year and their corresponding host grade:
