Pollution Prevention Week originated in California in 1992 and became a national effort in 1995. P2 Week recognizes pollution prevention efforts, and encourages education on pollution reduction. The National Pollution Prevention Roundtable (NPPR) is a founded Washington D.C. based organization that promotes P2 Week. P2 Week is celebrated during the third week of September each year.
Walk & Roll to School Day is an annual event that involves communities from across the country (and globe!) walking and rolling to school on the same day. It began in 1997 as a one-day event. Today, thousands of schools across America from all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico participate every October.
The first Green Friday was in Canada in 1992 and referred to as “Buy Nothing Day”. The movement encourages consumers to embrace ethical and mindful shopping by buying either from sustainable, ethical brands or by not buying anything at all. It is an initiative that sees brands give back to the environment. Green Friday is supported by multiple stakeholders, including representatives of the European Commission, ECODES, and WWF. Green Friday takes place on the Friday after Thanksgiving each year.

An estimated 20 million people nation wide attended events at thousands of sites, including schools, to demonstrate and protest to demand environmental protections. Earth Day now involves a wide range of activities and is celebrated in more than 193 countries world wide. Earth Day is celebrated on April 22nd each year.
The first American Arbor Day was originated by J. Sterling Morton of Nebraska City, Nebraska at an annual meeting at the Nebraska State board of agriculture held in Lincoln. On April 10, 1872, an estimated one million trees were planted in Nebraska. Arbor Day is a day to recognize the benefit of trees, and to plant, care for, and celebrate them. Arbor Day is celebrated on the last Friday in April each year.
The first-ever national Bike & Roll to School Day took place on May 9, 2012, in coordination with the League of American Bicyclists’ National Bike Month. Today, thousands of schools across America from all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico participate every May!
