The technical goals of this experiment were to find the length, width, height, volume, mass, and density of the given plastic blocks. The final goal is to get it to its density then find the name of the plastic that the block was made out of using the density of the block. The educational goals of this lab were too understand how to properly measure blocks of substances and learn how to find out their density from the measurements taken.
Materials
Blocks of plastic
A scale
A ruler
A Calculator
Take the length measurement in centimeters of a desired block and record your results on a paper you will use for the experiment
Take the width measurement in centimeters of the desired block and record your results on a paper you used for the experiment
Take the height measurement in centimeters of the desired block and record your results on a paper you used for the experiment
Set the scale so it is equal to zero
Place the desired block on the scale and record the mass in grams
After recording all your data in a data table multiply the length, width and, height together and record that number as your desired blocks volume
Using your data table divide the mass by the volume (mass/volume) record the result as the density of the desired block
I noticed it was very hard to line one end of a ruler up with a block unless you had a solid flat surface to push it against
8.11*3.09*2.45=61.39675 - Volume - 72.1/61.39675 - 1.174329164 - Density
5.81*4.82*2.51=70.290542 - Volume - 64.39/70.290542 - 0.9160549651 - Density
8.19*3.49*2.62=74.887722 - Volume - 107.9/74.887722 - 1.440823637 - Density
9.59*4.58*2.52=110.683944 - Volume - 108.1/110.683944 - 0.9766547531 - Density
41.59*8.78*4.19*1.78=65.482996 - Volume - 41.69/65.482996 - 0.6351267129 - Density
From the results experiment we learned how to accurately and properly find the density of a rectangular cube. We also learned how to properly measure in practice using significant figures and recording to the first uncertain digit and using these findings to find other properties about the rectangular cube and using all of our information we could Identify what the block was made out of.
We had multiple measurement errors that occurred we read from a wrong line one way we learned to easily prevent this was to double check your measurements.
I personally learned the process in taking and recording measurements on both a scale and a ruler. I enjoyed this experiment in many ways but I think the most enjoyable part of the experiment was setting things on the scale I really liked putting things onto digital scales. I found it very surprising that it took as long as it did to record all the data properly I thought it would be a breeze but to do it accurately it took much longer than I excepted.
