Math/Finance students why not try Actuarial Science!
An actuary is a business professional who uses mathematical and financial tools to help identify and manage risk, so it's a great career for students who are strong mathematically but who are not necessarily interested in teaching. It's also great for students who like business and have good math aptitude.

The United States Military Academy at West Point is excited to offer your rising seniors (current juniors) the Summer Leaders Experience (SLE)—a rigorous five-day, overnight immersion led entirely by current West Point cadets.
SLE offers an authentic look at cadet life and challenges students academically, militarily, physically, and socially. Participants will experience:
Hands-on academic workshops: Choose from 17 sessions taught by West Point faculty.
Physical and military training: Army PT workouts, obstacle courses (indoor and outdoor), the Candidate Fitness Assessment (CFA), and more.
Leadership and character development: Team-building exercises, the Leader Reaction Course, ethics discussions, and cadet-led activities.
Check out the SLE 2025 VIDEO to learn more about the experience.
Students can choose between three SLE sessions:
Session 1: May 30 – June 3
Session 2: June 5 – June 9
Session 3: June 11 – June 15
Applications for SLE open on February 15, and selections will be made on a rolling basis starting March 15. When high school students submit this application, it also completes the first part of the West Point application process. Ideal candidates will demonstrate academic excellence, leadership within their community, and a readiness to take on physical challenges.
West Point provides scholarships to cover the $495 SLE fee and travel expenses for students with documented financial need.

Medical Laboratory Scientists perform medical laboratory tests for the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease. Someone who would be interested in this type of career is a problem-solver, a team player, someone who is focused on detail, and possesses good dexterity. The subjects they would be interested in, and need to study in High School and college would be: Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Mathematics. The specialized courses in college they would be studying are Clinical Chemistry, Clinical Microbiology, Clinical Immunology, Clinical Hematology, Clinical Immunohematology, and laboratory operations and management.
We are now offering a job shadowing experience at the CLB. . A job shadowing experience at the CLB for a high school student is following a laboratorian as they go about their workday. The job shadow will mostly involve observing and listening. However, to keep the student interested and engaged they will be provided with chances to perform simple job duties. They will have very limited interaction with actual patient samples, and several tasks can be simulated for them, to limit their risk of blood and body fluid exposure. The student will have the opportunity to see what their mentor’s schedule is like, what other healthcare professionals they interact with on any given day, what types of different tasks and duties they perform, and what knowledge and skill sets they use in their job. The job shadow experience should last approximately between 8:30am-3:30pm, The mentor will fill out paperwork for the student that is necessary for the obligation of their own school district. The student should be able to list upon completion of their job shadowing experience what medical laboratory departments, equipment, and procedures they had the opportunity to observe.
The shadowing dates occur on the first Tuesday or the third Friday of every month, now-May.
Nationwide, there is a great need for staffing in the laboratory areas, so there are many job opportunities.

The opportunity to study math, science, and engineering at a highly selective college opens up a world of possibilities for students with the ability, commitment, and motivation to succeed. As you guide your top juniors, please consider those who are academically talented, physically fit, are considering a service academy, and thrive when making a difference in the lives of others. For these students, a great opportunity awaits this summer at the Academy Introduction Mission (AIM) program.
AIM is an intense, hands-on, six-day immersion that challenges, tests, and inspires. Participants develop teamwork and leadership skills, complete engineering projects, and learn what it is like to be a cadet at United States Coast Guard Academy. For many students, AIM is life changing.
For more information, check out our AIM website, which has application guidance, student blogs, and program FAQs. Applications, which require a counselor recommendation, are due April 1st. We encourage you to learn more about AIM and for your top students to apply. Please feel free to reach out to us if you have any questions. Thank you!
Sincerely,
