An Exploration of power

Through Students' Eyes
9th and 10th Grade English Students
Cleveland Heights High School
Cleveland Heights, Ohio

In the summer of 2021, after a year of online and hybrid learning, a group of 9th and 10th grade students came together to examine the theme of power. Their goal was to explore three questions:

  1. What do you believe gives you power?

  2. What do you believe helps you have more power?

  3. What do you believe hinders your ability to have power?

Through a series of nonfiction readings, vocabulary lessons, Socratic seminars, and a novel study of the book Dear Justyce, by Nic Stone, the students read about, talked about, and wrote about ideas and themes of power as it related to other texts, the world, and themselves. For the final project, students used a technique called photovoice and were asked to identify and take pictures of power in their world. Students then participated in an authentic writing experience answering the three questions above. Click on the category below to see the students' writings and photos.
