A new year's resolution is a very common tradition around the world, mainly in the Western and Eastern Hemisphere. The resolution originated in ancient Babylon 4000 years ago. It is a promise people will make to themselves to become better because a new year is like a new start. This year my resolutions are to read more, eat healthier, and be more positive. I went around and asked some people what their resolutions this year were and here are the answers I got.
Drink more water- Makenzie Rusnak and Kirsten Morelli
Stop spending money on herself- Mrs. Carpinello
Eat healthier- Alex Farrell
Not have to take the finals and get good grades- Natalee Haycisak
Be more productive- Ena Lopez
Cook one thing each day to get better- Rea Kosicki
Make his bed every morning- DJ Weaver
Wash her face more often- Paige Burkey
Take care of body better and eat healthier- Maddy Link

Christmas Week In The High School
The Magic Behind Our School Spirit
"I do Believe! I Believe in the magic of the seasons, I Believe in all the Gifts our CH kids have, I Believe they will go on to do wonderful things, I Believe in the Highlander Pride and I Believe I am Blessed to be a tiny part of their lives." - Mrs. Venesky

When students walk into school every day, they are greeted with wonderful winter decorations all around the school. Many students do not think twice about the time or the work it took for these decorations to go up. In fact, many people do not know who put up these decorations. The magic behind this winter wonderland is Mrs. Venesky.
Mrs. Venesky is the pride behind our school spirit. She has been teaching in the school district since 1984. She teaches math and freshman seminar classes, but what many people do not know is that she is also the Spirit Club Advisor. Before the spirit club was invented, Mrs. Venesky would bring as much spirit as she could to the school. About 6 or 7 years ago, she decided to create a spirit club, because students wanted to help her decorate the school. She also needed a group of students to help with the Highlander Foundation events. Spirit Club was formed and now the club decorates the school for every holiday.
Most recently, the club has taken on the task of decorating for Christmas. Christmas is Mrs. Venesky's favorite holiday, so it is an extra special time of year for the club. Everywhere you turn in the school there is a Christmas decoration. Students have decorated trees with homemade ornaments that they made during the Thanksgiving pass out of class. There are bulletin boards covered in Christmas prints and patterns. Every locker even has a magnet with a Christmas shape on it. The club is also hosting a Christmas door decorating contest for all the homerooms to participate in. Homerooms began to decorate their doors and are becoming very competitive with one another. In addition to decorating for holidays, the club hands out candy to students on Halloween and helps decorate the football field and town for homecoming.
The high school truly appreciates everything Mrs. Venesky has done for the school. She would rather give credit to the students than herself, but without her, there would not be a spirit club. Mrs. Venesky is a selfless person with a heart of gold. She puts so much extra time and dedication into this school and her hard work should not go unnoticed.

Christmas Decorations
By: Stella Illig
There are many different Christmas decorations people typically like to use. For example, bells, garland, snow globes, stockings, angels, candy canes, and many more. My personal favorites are candy canes and stockings. I asked people around the school what their favorites were and here are the answers I got!
Mackenzie Rusnak, Lauren Weld, and Rea Kosicki said their favorites were Christmas lights.
Natalee Haycisak and Maggie Wallen said a Christmas tree.
Maddy Link said stockings.
Mrs. Carpinello said her favorite was the Harry Potter tree that she puts up every year.
Kirsten Morelli said nutcrackers.
Irelynn Mcgary said candles.
Dj Weaver and Rachael Findley said snowflakes.
Maya Francis said candy canes.

While many of us celebrate Christmas every December 24th and 25th, another religion celebrates their holiday for eight consecutive days on end! The Jewish holiday known as Hanukkah is observed for eight days and nights. Hanukkah is also known as the festival of lights. This celebration is to mark the re-dedication of the temple in Jerusalem. Hanukkah normally occurs between late November and early December. However, the exact dates change each year. This is because the festival always lies on the 25th day of the Kislev in the Hebrew calendar. This year, Hanukkah began the evening of Sunday, November 28th, and ended the evening of Monday, December 6.
Hanukkah is represented by using the colors blue, white, and sometimes even silver. Though colors have little to do with the holiday's religious meaning, decorating is always fun. On the other hand, Hanukkah's celebration actually revolves around the kindling of a nine-branch menorah. This menorah is also known as a Hanukkah. On each night of the celebration, a candle is added and lit on the menorah. The menorah symbolizes the creation in seven days with the middle candle representing the Sabbath. The middle candle called the ‘Shamash’, is used to light the others. Lighting these candles on each day of Hanukkah has long been a religious responsibility placed by the ages. Not only this, but while lighting the candles, traditional songs and blessings are usually recited. Gifts and money are given to children each day as well.
As any holiday, food is a huge part of the tradition. Some traditional foods for Hanukkah consist of latkes, beef briskets, roasted chicken, kugel, matzo ball soup, rugelach, sufganiyot (jelly filled donuts), and challah. And while food is highly significant during Hanukkah, the game dreidel is just as popular. The game dreidel is based around a spinning top. The actual dreidel itself is a spinning top with 4 sides, each having a Hebrew letter. In closing, it is clear that Hanukkah is a beloved and joyous holiday celebrated by Jewish families around the world!
