Frick Park Bridge Collapse
Stella Illig
The morning of January 28th, the Forbes Avenue Bridge in Frick Park Pittsburgh collapsed. Several vehicles and a bus were on it when it collapsed. There were 10 reported injuries and 4 people were taken to the hospital. The people who were on the bridge formed a human chain to pull everyone up, which was about 150 feet. Chief of Pittsburgh's Bureau of Fire, Darryl Jones said, “A half hour later the bridge would’ve been full with vehicles of commuters going back-and-forth, It would’ve been a lot worse.” It is still unknown why the bridge collapsed, but it is under investigation. According to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation website the bridge was in poor condition, so that may have been the cause of it falling. This event happened just a couple hours before Biden’s speech about his $1.2 trillion infrastructure plan. Many people think it was a pretty strange coincidence. The bridge will be closed for a couple years so it can be reconstructed.
The Hard Case of Gabby Petito
By Stella Illig
A couple by the names of Gabby Petito, age 22, and her fiance Brain Laundrie went on a cross-country trip on July 2, 2021 to visit many sights in Kansas, Utah, Colorado, and other states. Gabby posted many pictures during her trip on her instagram account. On August 12th someone noticed erratic driving behavior by Laundrie and claimed they may have seen him hit Petito. Then claims came out that the couple were physically fighting . When cops pulled them over, Gabby explained while crying that they have been fighting a lot because they have been spending so much time together. It was later revealed that she has OCD and anxiety, so she would get upset easily and Brian did not handle her emotions very well. They then were told by the cop to separate for the night and relax, because they did not want domestic abuse charges.
The couple then made a youtube channel to post vlogs of their trip on August 19. Gabby’s last instagram post was on August 25th with a post of her holding a pumpkin that was captioned, “Happy Halloween”, the post did not include any information of her location. The last text her parents received from her was on August 30, but her parents do not think she sent the text because the message did not sound like her.
Her mother then reported Gabby missing on September 11th . Brian returned to his parents house on September 1st with Gabby nowhere to be seen. When Gabby’s family realized he returned without Gabby they were worried. Then, on September 14 Gabby’s family said, “Brian is refusing to tell Gabby's family where he last saw her. Brian is also refusing to explain why he left Gabby all alone and drove the van to Florida," the family then also said, "These are critical questions that require immediate answers," Brian refused to speak with the investigators about anything. On the 14th, Brain’s family issued a statement that they would not be involved with the search for Gabby through their lawyer.
On September 17th police announced that Laundrie had been missing from his home since the 14th. "We've been trying all week to talk to his family, to talk to Brian, and now they've called us here on Friday, we've gone to the home, and they're saying now they have not seen their son," North Port police spokesperson, Josh Taylor, informed the media that Laundrie's lawyer said on Friday: "Be advised that the whereabouts of Brian Laundrie are currently unknown." The FBI went to Brian's home and took some of his stuff. His parents told the authorities that he went hiking at Carlton Reserve, but never came back home and did not take his phone.
On September 19th the search team found a body that fit Gabby’s description at a remote campsite in the Bridger–Teton National Forest. The police ruled her death as a homicide.
Search teams then went to a 24,000 acre nature park, that Brian’s parents claimed he went to after coming home without Gabby. On September 23rd an arrest warrant was put out for Laundrie. As the search for Laundrie was ongoing rewards of $30,000 went out for any information on his location. The search went on for two weeks. On September 27th authorities took some of his items to extract his DNA to hopefully find some answers.
More footage from August 12th was released and there were visible bruises on Gabby’s body. On October 7th, the family's attorney released a statement: "Chris Laundrie is assisting Law Enforcement today in the search for Brian. Chris was asked to point out any favorite trails or spots that Brian may have used in the preserve.” On October 3rd it was announced at a press conference that Gabby Petito was strangled to death. It is believed it was around 3-4 weeks before Gabby’s body was found.
On October 20th investigators found what seems to be human remains at a preserve in Florida. Near the remains they found a notebook and bookbag that belonged to Laundrie. People have been theorizing that Laundrie might have killed someone else and left his items with them so the investigators would think it was his remains which would give himself more time to get away. Then on October 21 the remains were confirmed to be Laundrie’s. The five-week search for him has finally come to an end. Police Investigators believe as of now
Laundrie took his own life. The world has been watching the hard case of poor Gabby Petito since the beginning of September and now the world has all the answers.
