Catch Me If You Can!
The Musical!
Show Dates- March 18, 19, 20
Interview, By: Austin Malenich
Every school year, the theater department comes together to perform a musical that will have the crowd talking for weeks. The musical this year, Catch Me If You Can will be a comedy that will have everyone laughing . The production is about a precarious teenager running away from home and going on the adventure of a lifetime. Though our charming, likable protagonist in the production, Frank Abagnale Jr , played by senior Peyton Gaida, is swaying his way through life posing as a doctor, pilot , and even a lawyer! The FBI has been notified and is now on a chase to catch this fugitive. I had the chance to sit down with the musical director, Ms. Crandall to discuss her thoughts for the upcoming production. “The dances are what I'm most excited for this year,” Ms. Crandall stated in her interview. The dances are definitely going to make the musical this year a hit, as well as the catchy and full hearted songs. I asked her if she was nervous with anything in the production. She stated, “The set and light crew consist of a younger group of students so it might be overwhelming teaching the crew how to use the different technical devices, but with the motivation and dedication each and every one of them have, they should catch on pretty quick.” With the humorous dialogue and the musical numbers the show is destined to be a hit!

Senior Trip To Benzette
By Lyndsey Kitchen
On September 20, the senior environmental science classes went on a field trip to Benzette, located in Elk County. The classes spent weeks leading up to the trip learning all about elk. They learned about the history of elk, their environment, and their anatomy. On September 20, the students arrived at the school at five a.m. to leave for the trip. After a two-hour drive, the students were pleased to see elk as soon as they arrived in Elk County. They spotted a herd of 4-5 elk standing on a lawn as the bus was driving down through town. The students started their morning off by watching the sunrise over a field of flowers while “elk watching”. After about an hour of “elk watching” over fields, the students finally saw an elk up close. Students spent the next hour observing elk bugling to each other and grazing the field.
In the late morning, the students broke off into groups at the Elk County visiting center. The groups rotated around different elk education sessions. The sessions included a presentation on elk anatomy, a 4-D movie experience, an elk antler measuring lesson, a sustainability presentation, and building an elk skeleton. After all the sessions and a quick stop at the gift shop, the students moved to the state game lands. They were given a guided tour of the lands, where they learned about different job positions for the Game Commission, learned about hunting, and learned about other animals that affect and interact with the elk.
After the tour, the students piled into the bus to return to the school. On the way out of Elk county, the students saw more elk just grazing on people’s lawns. Following up on their trip, the students did a group presentation. The students were each assigned roles in a debate. The topic of the debate was, “Should we bring elk to Patton?” The students spent days researching information and presented the debate to Mr. Thomas and Mr. Novella. Both sides created valid arguments and the debate showed the students had a passion for elk. After this unit, it is clear that students have an appreciation for the elk in Pennyslvania.

Red Ribbon Week
Red Ribbon week is the largest and oldest national drug awareness program implemented in schools across the nation. Red Ribbon week first began in 1985 as a tribute to the Drug Enforcement Administration Special Agent Enrique “Kiki” Camarena, after being tragically murdered by drug traffickers. After his death people wore red ribbons to honor him. Today, we continue to wear red ribbons to indulge in the awareness to have a drug free life. This year, our school's Red Ribbon week was held on October 25th through October 29th. Each student is given a Red Ribbon to wear during the week. The Students Against Destructive Decisions Club works really hard every year to create theme days, so students are able to show their support. This year's theme days included: Monday was college day, Tuesday was “Age Day”, Wednesday was pajama day, Thursday was costume day, and Friday was class colors.
