The World Language Department of the Chippewa Falls Area Unified School District offers five levels of French and Spanish instruction for students in grades 8 - 12. The 7th grade Exploratory program gives students a preview of both French and Spanish to help them to decide which language they want to pursue in 8th grade. The 6th grade French and Spanish Culture classes begins to expose students to learning a language and about the culture.
Students are able to begin level 1 French and Spanish in 8th grade at Chippewa Falls Middle School, or they may choose to start the programs at Chippewa Falls High School. French 5 and Spanish 5/AP Spanish prepare students for conversational confidence after graduation, college placement tests, and the AP Language & Culture exams.
In addition to four or five years of language study in a program that focuses on instructional methods centered on "comprehensible input," students have the opportunity to join French Club and Spanish Club. They can also travel to Concordia Language Villages in Bemidji, MN, or to embark on one of our international trips to France or a Spanish-speaking country to experience culture and practice their language skills while living with host families.
Students who move in to our district having completed courses in other schools take a placement test to see where their reading comprehension, speaking fluency, and writing abilities measure up to the standards in our program. Heritage speakers of Spanish are also given a placement test by our teachers to see what level will best fit their abilities, goals, and previous experience learning Spanish in a classroom setting or in the home. Above all, our goal is to place students in a course that not only fits their abilities but also challenges them to grow in language fluency from where they currently are.
