Point System and Contracts with Penalties and Fines for Middle School and Teenagers
Purpose:
This system fosters responsibility, accountability, and positive behavior in middle school-age children and teens. Combining a point system with fines provides a structured approach to teaching the consequences of actions and choices, offering parents a hopeful path to guiding their children's behavior.
Pre-Implementation:
1. The family Agreement is a crucial component of this system. Parents can feel empowered and in control of the system by creating an explicit, written agreement that details the system's rules, point values for various tasks and behaviors, and the consequences for breaking the rules. The family must sign this agreement, reinforcing the collective commitment to the system. Point System: Choose a way to track points (e.g., chart, app). Decide how many points can be earned for different tasks and behaviors.
2. Baseline Earnings: Determine the average points your child can earn daily by doing their usual chores and behaving well. This will be used to calculate fines.
System Structure:
1. Earning Points: Kids can earn points for:
· Completing chores (e.g., making their bed, cleaning their room)
· Showing positive behavior (e.g., being respectful, helping others)
· Doing well in school
2. Fines for Missed Opportunities: If a child doesn't do a chore or misses a chance to earn points, they lose the equivalent number of points they would have earned if the behavior or task had been completed.
3. Fines for antisocial behavior: Behaviors such as lying, yelling, stealing, or fighting will result in losing points. The initial fine should be about 1/3 of their average daily earnings.
4. Repeat Offenses: If antisocial behavior happens again soon after, the fine inceases to 1/2 of average daily earnings.
5. Time-Outs or Loss of Privileges: After losing points twice for the same behavior, a time-out or loss of a privilege (e.g., no screen time, can't go out with friends) will be given. Then drop the matter.
Additional Considerations:
Transparency: Record points earned and lost where everyone can see them.
Flexibility: Adjust point values and fines as needed.
Positive Reinforcement: Celebrate and reward good behavior with praise, extra points, or special activities.
Communication: Talk openly about the system's importance and how everyone is doing.
Important Note: This system is about helping kids learn and grow, not just punishing them. Always show love and support, even when giving consequences.
